The first transmission of the new Derren Brown Mind Control series on Channel 4 on Friday 28th February achieved an excellent television audience of 2.5 million (as a comparison the programme that was in the same time slot in the previous week achieved just 1.6 million). Needless to say Channel 4 are delighted, on top of which it has just been announced that the series has been short-listed in the Variety award category at this year's Golden Rose of Montreux International Television Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. The Sheffield Circle of Magicians present a Day of Magic on April 27th, with both daytime events and a show in the evening. The day runs from 10am to 4.30pm at the Platinum Suite, Sheffield United FC, Bramall Lane, Sheffield S2 4SU, telephone 0114 221 5757, and features six dealers and three lectures: Paul Hallas lectures on strong visual magic that is easy to do. Matthew Johnson, from Canada, presents his hit lecture 'Up Close & Personal' and Star lecture from Roger Crosthwaite will give a new lecture 'On the shoulders of Giants' which is a tribute to Houdini, Doc Elliot and Will Goldston. In the evening there's a show that's aimed at the public as well and will run from 7.30pm to 10pm at The Sheffield Central Library Theatre, Central Library, Sheffield S1 1XZ. Names announced so far: Illusionists David Bolton and Morgan Lee, prize winning manipulator David Charles, and stand-up magician Matthew Johnson.
