British Ring Convention updates: There's a strong emphasis on close-up magic at this year's British Ring Convention in Southport (Wednesday 27th September to Sunday 2nd October). Michael Close, Reed McClintock, Joshua Jay, Simon Lovell, Sean Carpenter and Marc Oberon (photo) have all been booked to perform in the close-up gala (two identical sessions to ease viewing) with Michael Close, Joshua Jay and Simon Lovell lecturing as well. For children's entertainers Tim Hannig will be performing a section of his 'Pro Kids Show' to an audience of 150 children. Then, after the show and when the children have left, he'll present his specialist children's lecture covering the thinking he applies to his performances. Scott Penrose will lecture on contemporary magic. In 1997 he won the Dittia Shield for Manipulation and in 2000 became the first Magic Circle Stage Magician of the Year. Updates in a few weeks. With a smile the magician reaches behind the boy's ear and comes out with an egg. The young boy, just five years old, looks up in amazement. The seed had been planted... Doug Segal returns to The Magic Cavern in August "Doug's performances sold out last year, smashing the theatre's box office record for the fastest selling show in the process. Although all of the workings would be in the open, the effect would still be jaw dropping... You will be amazed!" Tuesday 9th - Sunday 21st August 2005. See What's On for details. 4.6.05

Magic Aid 2005 update from Michael Chandler: Well I have returned from working in the survivor camps of Southern Thailand. I worked in many different venues and for all sorts of audiences. I was well looked after by Linda Cruse and her assistant Soumchai. When I arrived at one totally devastated village school, Ban Nam Khem, I was told that the canteen roof had just fallen in due to the heavy rain that was falling. Luckily no one was in there at the time. It was in this canteen that I had been scheduled to perform in but I moved into a wall-less classroom and did the act there instead. All the audiences, adults and children, were very appreciative. They all live sparse lives in the camps but exercise tolerance, patience, resolution and often humour as they struggle to cope. It was a pleasure to be involved in this project and I have accepted a request to go to Sri Lanka at the end of July and continue performing in the camps there. I have been told that the devastation is far worse there than in Thailand. 4.6.05
