Jim Cellini was one of the truly great street performers. An incredibly charismatic man both on and off stage, his style and look created an act template that can be seen across the world, wherever a busking pitch is available. As he travelled, his skill and manner entranced fellow magicians and other performers alike, and some of those whose careers he touched and shaped will gather at this year's International Magic Convention in London (November 26th-28th) to pay tribute to his life, which so sadly ended last year. Artists in the Saturday afternoon show include Gazzo - perhaps the most internationally recognised busking magician of the modern day; Michael Vincent to illustrate the teachings of Slydini with whom Cellini diligently studied; Richard McDougall to talk about the man and his incredible life, and Johnny Fox, regular American Renaissance Fair performer and long time friend of Jim Cellini. www.internationalmagic.com. Conjuring at the Court – 30th September. Conjuring at the Court returns on Thursday 30th September with a top lineup: "Max Somerset is one of the UK’s leading magicians, with two series on Sky TV, Max Magic and Undercover Magic, and a starring role in another TV series, The Sorcerer's Apprentice. A versatile performer who treads the line between genius and madness! Pat Fallon has all the charm you’d expect from Ireland’s leading magical entertainer. He’s made over 90 TV appearances and delights audiences all over the world with his expert conjuring. Katherine Rhodes is a polished, professional magician and mind reader with her own show at Wilton’s Music Hall. John Kimmons is a ventriloquist that even Simon Cowell enjoys. A hilarious performer with an original approach that involves the audience in the show. Compère Otiz Cannelloni (photo) has a mind more suited to testing crash helmets, his performance fluctuates between sheer genius and downright stupidity. Just when you suspect he doesn’t have a clue, Cannelloni removes all doubt. It’s taken years of practice to make something so simple look so difficult. Conjuring at the Court is now Greater London’s longest-running monthly magic show, enjoyed by regulars and newcomers alike. The show is great value with the opportunity to see a full evening of magic from some of the UK’s finest performers for only £10." An additional event has been added to programme for the IBM British Ring Convention at Eastbourne. Bob Hayden writes: The Cassadaga Propaganda is a new show written by Ben Hart and Neil Kelso with their company "Kindred Phenomena Theatre". The period spanning 1840 to 1940 provides the inspiration for the show. Voices from the grave and spooky mediums and their stories are featured. It's a show about ghosts and spiritualism, which runs for seventy minutes with no interval. You can see it at midnight in the Jevington Room of the Convention Headquarters hotel, the Landsdowne, after the Saturday Gala. Seating is limited to 80 so this will be a ticketed event, with a charge £5 to cover the cost of the room hire. Tickets will be available from the registration desk from the Thursday morning of the Convention onwards. The British Ring is very pleased to be able to offer an early preview of this new show to Conventioneers. Ben Hart, a winner of The Magic Circle Young Magician of the Year, and Neil Kelso are both members of the Winchester Magical Society, a very active magical club. The show has been devised for the general public but will be of special interest to magicians who are into mentalism or enjoy bizarre magic. It includes many mental effects not seen for some time. This is a theatrical show appropriate to the bewitching hour. To read more from Bob Hayden this week, Click Here. School of Magic in Gillingham. Jack Delvin MIMC writes: It gives me great pleasure to announce the opening of a new branch of The London School of Magic in the Medway area. I honestly think, bearing in mind it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, that I am offering a valuable service to magic and magicians. A little over a year ago I started a magic school in my home town of Orpington. It has been running very successfully since then every Saturday morning from 10am – 12noon. Following on from that, three months ago I started another school this time in Banstead, Surrey, on Sundays. I am now planning to open up in Gillingham, every Saturday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm at The Spyglass and Kettle, 2 Woodside, Gillingham, Kent. ME8 0PG

Free Open Day. I am holding a free open day on Saturday 18th September from 2pm - 4pm. The number of students at any one time will be limited so that they all get personal attention. Whatever your interest, or level of ability, I am confident I can help you. The cost is just £10 per session and you do not have to commit yourself to a set course. This is ideal for anyone who has a particular aim in mind; to enter a competition, take an audition for The Magic Circle, turn pro. or just improve. No magician is perfect, we all need a bit of help. Why don’t you just come along and see what it is all about? I would greatly welcome your support.

Please feel free to give me a ring if you are at all interested, or just turn up on the day. I am not setting out to make a fortune, I just want to cover my costs and put something back into magic. Incidentally if you live too far away to get to the meetings I have a fantastic new way of helping you wherever you live!

Deeper and Deeper: The Secrets of Stage Hypnosis by Jonathan Chase. "Jonathan Chase's book Deeper and Deeper is a very nuts & bolts approach to Stage Hypnosis a Complete Instruction Course in a book; and should be appreciated by those with experience, as well as by newcomers to the profession. I linked instantly to Jonathan's wit and directness in Deeper and Deeper and read parts of the book several times. If you get only one piece of useful information from any book then it's well worth the time and money. From this book, I'm sure most Stage Hypnotists (whatever their level of ability or experience) will get a great deal more! I especially liked Jonathan's obvious concern for the safety and wellbeing of his volunteers as well as his attention to the behind the scenes professionalism of a successful Stage Hypnotist. I recommend this book very highly and look forward to any subsequent writings from Jonathan." Grant Boddington - editor Hypnotes. Available from Amazon.co.uk Click Here. 11.9.10

Penrith magician, Stuart Hodgson, has become a magic champion for the second year running after a year of competitions with fellow entertainers from throughout the North of England; winning the coveted President’s Wand Trophy at Darlington Magic Circle. The popular and busy children’s entertainer who goes by the name Stu-Di-Doo had to take part in six different competitions featuring different aspects of magic throughout the year and was judged upon his performance, magical content and ability. To add to this he was also nominated and elected to become the next Secretary of the Darlington Magic Circle. Stuart said, “I’m really pleased to win the Presidents Wand again, especially as so many good magicians took part over the year. It was good fun and also a chance to prove that I do more than balloon models and children’s parties. To be elected to act as Secretary for the Circle is an incredible honour, even though it will no doubt involve a lot of extra work. I’m now looking forward to a very busy year and hopefully trying to defend my title.” www.thedarlingtonmagiccircle.co.uk. 11.9.10

Further Workshop Plans by Granville Taylor (Faust the Magician). Just published. A Limited Edition of 200 Copies, each one numbered and signed by the Author. 92 pages, including 12 pages in full colour. "This book is the third volume of my Workshop Plans books and I have saved the best until the last. As a stage assistant to Murray in 1951, and later with The Great Lyle (1953) I had the opportunity and pleasure of seeing two Masters of Magic performing twice nightly, presenting some of the best illusions of all time. Secretly I recorded details of the tricks and illusions in two notebooks, and filed descriptions and measurements of them later for future reference. This book includes much of that information and it appears here for the first time. Also included are the original plans I drew up over many years when making magical equipment to be used by myself as Faust the Magician in my theatre and cabaret tours around the world, and some to be marketed by ‘Taylor-Made Magic’ for other magicians..."
