The Order of The Magi (Manchester) were delighted to receive a talk from The Magical Claudine on 23rd August. Claudine had a long and distinguished career in magic. Her father was Claude Chandler, Honorary Vice President of The Magic Circle from 1958 until his death in 1977. He was also at that time President Elect of The Magi so it seemed fitting to use the occasion to grant Claudine Honorary Membership. The photo shows President Mike Sharples making the presentation. At the beginning of her career she had a very wide general training in theatre and dance becoming one of the Tiller Girls at the age of 15. Claudine told of her magic acts both silent and patter and many anecdotes about this illustrious career. She married pianist Chester Harriot, father of TV chef Ainsley. Claudine introduced her guest, Derek Hilton who told about the Top Hat Club in Manchester which had been set up in opposition to The Magi who would not let Derek and his friends join as they were too young. The evening was full of nostalgia, very enjoyable and highly recommended as an evening that is different. Finally, Claudine is a great supporter of the Myasthenia Gravis Association and The Magi were only too pleased to make a donation to this very worthwhile cause as an appreciation for such a memorable night. Michael Finney Lecture - Forth Valley Magic Circle. "Forth Valley Magic Circle are proud to announce, A lecture by Michael Finney on Tuesday the 13th September. Comedian, magician, philanthropist, corporate spokesman, motivational speaker and more. Michael Finney has more sides to his life than a well-cut diamond. There is an authenticity to him that seems to disarm an audience instantly, causing everyone to feel as if a friend has just stepped on stage. One reason for the respect Finney gets from other professionals may be the incredible amount of entertainment he's able to squeeze out of what seems to be so little. Give him a deck of cards, a pair of scissors, a rope and for the next hour the crowd can have the time of their lives! Finney's confidence is a by-product of sincerity and the audience connects with it and feeds it back to him in a beautiful way. In Michael's case, sincerity and authenticity transform a simple mixture of character, context, humour, and magic into something that not only entertains but inspires." Entrance is £10 for visiting magicians. Contact the club secretary for more details secretary@forthvalleymagic.co.uk. 3.9.11
