The new, and much improved, series 2 of BBC1's The Magicians got off to an excellent start last Saturday. Promised for tonight's show: "The Magicians returns with more celebrities and more jaw-dropping illusions. Darren McMullen hosts the second programme in a series of six, which sees comedy magician Pete Firman joined by Countryfile and Watchdog's Julia Bradbury; Barry and Stuart paired with Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood; and World Champion of Magic, Latimer with American icon David Hasselhoff. With each act performing four tricks, two of which are live, anything could happen. The stakes are high, as once all three acts have performed viewers get to vote for their favourite, with the losing team having to face a terrifying live forfeit. Highlights include a death-defying escape, some ninja magic and an awe-inspiring levitation, but who will have to face the forfeit once the votes have been counted?" Tonight, 6.35pm on BBC1, see TV Magic. 14.1.12

Beat the Wand is back for 2012! Andrew James and Magic Sam write: "Thank you to the performers and audience who made last year's show the best yet. Non-magical acts have proved to be more popular with the audience so we would love to continue the variety aspect this year. Juggling, Escapology, Contortion, Geek Magic, Bizarre, Occult, Mind Reading, Ventriloquism, Mouth Juggling, World record attempts... Of course magic is welcome in the show but remember the audience is 99.9% magicians so whatever the act, it will need a novel twist or presentation to capture the audiences interest. There were some fantastic spoof magic acts last year which also went down very well. If you are interested in performing here are the rules in brief: Acts must run between 3 to 5 minutes; Five giant wands will be thrown into the audience. After an act has performed for one minute the 'voting' begins. Once a wand holder has seen enough of your act they will hold their wand in the air. If five wands are in the air the act will stop; If an act reaches three minutes they are 'safe' and will be allowed to finish; From the acts who reached the three minute mark and "Beat the Wand" the audience will decide the winner by Clap-o-Meter; Performers will be supplied with a hand mic, a table and two chairs. There are no cameras or screens in the bar so close-up/table magic will not be suitable. If you are interested, or know someone who would love to be involved or need any further info then please email beatthewand@hotmail.co.uk Thanks guys, Andrew James and Magic Sam (The People's Magician). www.blackpoolmagic.com. 14.1.12

Magic at the Rose. The Rose Theatre in Kingston upon Thames are holding their annual Magic at the Rose event on 21st January. Magicians from the Surrey Society of Magicians will be joined by the Vox Brothers, performing their Spirit Cabinet routine and their version of the Bullet Catch. They will also be performing their version of the deadly Bullet Catch, which has killed over 12 magicians including the great Chung Ling Soo. A trick so dangerous that even Harry Houdini refused to perform it on stage. After the stage show, the audience is invited to adjourn to the bar areas where some fine magicians will perform incredible magic before your very eyes! A night to remember and a theatrical experience which will astound you for years to come." Tickets are available at www.rosetheatrekingston.org/visiting-productions/magic-rose. 14.1.12
