It's the oldest genre of magic... it's the newest genre of magic... Street Magic! Noel Britten writes: Magicians throughout the ages have performed on the street and passed the hat at the end of the show. Able to do as many shows as they wanted, and collecting money from the audience at their discretion is not only a brilliant way to build up performance time without waiting for the phone to ring for a booking, but also teaches the need for commercialism and attracting and holding an audience. These techniques can be applied to virtually all areas of our craft from trade shows or mix and mingle performances to outdoor bookings or pitching magic. All these aspects of working a 'street type environment' will be covered in the Tuesday session of The London Festival of Magic (November 12th), with a line up including Pete Wardell on aspects of working a crowd within a trade show environment; Terry Ward on how to successfully be booked and work at a theme park (and he should know having over performed over 30,000 shows over the last 23 years at Walt Disney World; Andy Reay on pitching magic, a growing trend with performers to add an extra revenue at the end of shows; Noel Britten, the originator of the Bizarre Bath Comedy Walk, who will outline how anyone can set up such an enterprise for very little outlay and without affecting your current bookings; Duncan Trillo who was one of the few performers to successfully work a silent act on the street for many years at Covent Garden; and to bring us bang up to date there will be an interview with Paul Zenon, who had the first aired UK street magic TV show on how TV affects the medium and has given a boost to the current perception of magic in the country. Good street performers are without doubt the masters of crowd control and in this information packed day you will find nuggets of use and interest no matter what branch of magic you perform. The Trickery is proud to present a Luke Jermay Workshop: "As well as bringing his successful one man show, 6th Sense, to Aberdeen, Luke will be holding a workshop on Saturday 2nd November. Despite being only 27 years old, Jermay has already made a profound and lasting impact on the landscape of magic and mentalism. Having published critically acclaimed books; 7 Deceptions, Building Blocks and 3510 as well as 38 other limited availability titles, his published material has made its way into the working performances of mentalists the world over. He has acted as consultant for, and directed, many leading TV performers and headlined with his one-man show ‘Mind Reader’ on the Las Vegas strip. The day will be divided into two parts. Part one will focus on 'The Alexander Approach - Making it Matter'. This part of the day will focus on scripting, delivery and concepts that are showcased within his performance. Here Luke will reveal the tricks, tips and techniques that he uses in his own material to make it more emotionally affecting. Part two will focus on 'Conjuring with Information' covering Luke’s obsession with the classic “People Reading – Questions and Answers Routine”. If you have seen either 'Mind Reader' in Las Vegas or 'Psychic Cabaret' in the UK you will know the power of a Q & A routine. The fee for this special workshop is £65 and can be reserved by emailing Iain McCarron iain@thetrickery.co.uk. Places are limited, sales are on a first come first served basis.
