Déjà vu. I really enjoyed Christian Lee's BGT semi-final performance on Wednesday evening. The guy's fun to watch... he's a true one-off original, full of surprises and silliness, yet he still manages to slot in some strong magic along the way. On Tuesday, magician Richard Jones also appeared in the semi-finals and has made it through to tonight's final (7.30pm, ITV) where he is currently favourite to win. Watching his two previous showings I'm afraid I was left with very little apart from a feeling of déjà vu. Richard Jones: Britain's Got Talent (see Oz Pearlman: America's Got Talent), and Richard Jones: Britain's Got Talent (see 16 year old Collins Key: America's Got Talent). DT. 28.5.16

London's First Festival of Close-up Magic. 28th-31st July 2016. From the organisers: The evocative drawing room of Grand Royale Hyde Park plays host to London’s first ever Festival of Close-Up Magic. Featuring a different top class professional magic act each night, this is a unique opportunity to witness the capital’s finest illusionists in extreme close-up. Festival producer Tony Middleton - star of the 5 star sell out show The Magic Hour comments: "I’m thrilled to be bringing this unique festival to London. For the first time audiences will be able to get really close to the magic, and witness miracles in their own hands. Everyone knows that on TV it’s often camera tricks – but when it’s right in front of you, you can’t deny it!" For its first run, the star studded line up includes members of The Inner Magic Circle and magicians who have appeared on ITV’s Penn & Teller: Fool Us, as well as Sky, BBC and NBC. Celebrities have loved them, and so will you! The shows: Dominick Zwolinski: Konjurations; Chris Dugdale: Up Close; Kockov: Much more than just a magician; Max Somerset: Wizard of Odd. Talent. Neil Bonner writes: Magic plays a significant role in Victoria Wood's first play, Talent, which is being revived at the New Vic, Newcastle-under-Lyme, North Staffs, until June 4 (see What's On). Written when she was just 25 and first performed in 1978, the play, about a secretary bidding to become a talent show winner, features two past-it magicians called George and Arthur, superbly played by Brendan Charleson and Andrew Pollard. Between them they perform such classics as Six-Card Repeat and Silks to Cane, as well as the more adventurous Lighted Candle Through Arm. Magician and actor Liam Gerrard is the play's magic consultant. My review for The Stage can be seen at www.thestage.co.uk/reviews. 28.5.16
