Number 914 - 30th December 2017

Finnish magician/visual artist, Kalle Nio, presents Lähtö. Opening the 2018 London International Mime Festival. A man and woman are drifting apart. Their relationship is complicated. What remain are memories, images and illusions they cannot control. What is mirage and what is real? Combining cinematic video projections with 19th century stage-magic techniques, Kalle Nio creates mystery, unease and dark humour in this award-winning show. Original and intriguing, new circus meets the world of visual art to explore estrangement and conflict; its teasing ambiguity reminiscent of Michelangelo Antonioni's 1960s cult movie L'Eclisse in his famous 'trilogy on modernity and its discontents'. The twisted, dreamlike soundscape is the work of composer, Samuli Kosminen, well known for his collaborations with Kronos Quartet. Co-founded by Finnish magician/visual artist, Kalle Nio, WHS productions have toured worldwide and been important factors in the recent rise to prominence of Finnish new circus.

The London International Mime Festival, directed by Helen Lannaghan and Joseph Seelig, is a unique event in the theatre calendar, a once a year chance to see the very best and newest contemporary visual theatre that embraces cutting edge circus, physical theatre, juggling, object manipulation, physical comedy and productions that interweave theatre and film. 2018 London International Mime Festival. 10th January – 3rd February www.mimelondon.com. Alan Rorrison lecture - Forth Valley Magic Circle, Wednesday 3rd January. Secretary Ian Black writes: Alan is one of the world’s leading TV magic consultants. His creative style of magic has lead him to creating magical effects for Dynamo and Troy, and also effects used by magicians all over the world. His recent lecture at the IBM British Ring Convention in Greenock went down an absolute storm: "I haven't had to search hard to find a superlative to describe Alan's lecture as one springs straight to mind, that is generous. He gave a lot of very good tricks away and fully explained everything." (Key Ring magazine) This will be a lecture you won't want to miss - you will definitely get something out of it even if you've seen Alan lecture before. He will have some products to sell, but always tries to leave attendees with material they can just use with little or no outlay, supporting his ethos that "the whole point of a lecture for me is to get as much fun usable stuff to the viewer as possible". So as the excitement of Christmas and New Year starts to die down, why not spend an evening with one of the great creative minds in magic today, and learn some real workable magic? Wednesday 3rd January at 7.30pm at the Station Hotel, Larbert FK5 4AW (Map). Visiting magicians are welcome (£10 entry). For further information please see www.facebook.com/fvmagiccircle or contact Ian Black on secretary@forthvalleymagic.co.uk. 30.12.17
