Beat the Wand is back! Celebrating its 10th year at the Blackpool Magic Convention, the ultimate entertainment experience returns once more. Magic Sam and Andrew James will be your guides through the most unpredictable 90 minutes of the entire weekend. As always the show's success relies on one special ingredient. You!

Beat the Wand is an interactive magical variety talent gong show open to all convention attendees. You have 3-5 minutes to blow the audience away with your act. Non-magical acts have proved to be more popular with the audience over the years and we have witnessed Juggling, Escapology, Contortion, Geek Magic, Bizarre, Occult, Mind Reading, Impressions, World Record attempts and more! Of course magic is welcome in the show but remember the audience is 99.9% magicians so whatever the act, it will need a novel twist or presentation to capture the audiences interest. If you are interested in performing here are the rules...

• Your act must last a minimum of three and a maximum of five minutes.
• Five giant wands will be thrown into the audience. After an act has performed for one minute the "voting" begins. Once a wand holder has seen enough of your act they will place their wand in the air. If five wands are in the air the act will stop.
• Once all the acts have performed, those who survived and "beat the wand" are invited on stage and the winner is decided by clap-o-meter and will be presented with the Beat the Wand trophy.

Performers will be supplied with a microphone, mic stand and also a table and chairs if needed. There are no cameras or screens in the performance area so close-up magic will not be suitable. If you are interested, or know someone who would love to be involved or need any further info then please contact: beatthewand@hotmail.co.uk. Andy James.

Be Astonished! A talk by Ian Keable, at Highgate Cemetery on Tuesday, 23rd January. A talk about two magicians who are buried in Highgate Cemetery; both remarkable performers in their own right.

Colonel Stodare was the co-inventor and performer of the greatest illusion of the 19th century, The Sphinx. It caused an absolute sensation when first shown - one newspaper stating it was "the most remarkable deception ever included in a conjurer's programme". Sadly Stodare's time to enjoy the success of his creation was short-lived. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 34.

Carlton, often known as the Human Hairpin, couldn't have been more of a contrast. A man who combined card manipulations with slick patter and a totally original tight fitting costume and wig to create a unique comedy persona; a timeless character that one could imagine would be just as successful today as he was in the early 20th century. He lived nearly twice as long as Stodare but had a sad end as he put on weight and lost the 'magic' that had made him a variety hall sensation.

In this talk Ian will be not only showing many images to illustrate the lives of these two ground-breaking magicians; but also performing one or two tricks. These include the Stodare Egg trick and Carlton's closure, which always brought the house down. The talk is at Highgate Cemetery (in the little chapel which is on the West Side), Swain’s Lane, London N6 6PJ (Map), on Tuesday, 23rd January. Doors open at 7pm. Cost is £10. A suitably spooky venue for a talk on magic. For details about the talk and to book visit www.highgatecemetery.org/events.
