Polaroid’s secret showman. A new article in Cabinet magazine by Jonathan Allen and Jan Isenbart explore how in the spring of 1948, months before Polaroid officially released its first revolutionary instant camera, the German magician Helmut Schreiber, aka Kalanag, somehow obtained a prototype in the ruins of postwar Hamburg and began incorporating the “magic of instantaneity” into his shows. How did Kalanag, former "chamber magician" to the Third Reich leadership, become one of Polaroid photography’s earliest creative interpreters, if not its first? In this Anglo-German collaboration, Jonathan and Jan investigate the technical and political legerdemain of Polaroid’s secret showman. If any collectors have Polaroids from Kalanag’s show in their collection, please do get in touch with Jonathan and Jan. 25.3.23
