Staging Magic: The Story Behind The Illusion Exhibition - University of London

April Dates

Our new exhibition Staging Magic - The Story Behind The Illusion opens in January, celebrating the history of magical literature and revealing the world’s most loved magic tricks and stage illusions from 16th century to early 20th century. It’s free and open to the public from Monday 21st January until Saturday 15th June 2019 at Senate House Library, 4th floor of Senate House, part of the University of London.

The exhibition takes people on a journey of the world’s greatest magicians, such as Houdini, David Devant and psychic researcher Harry Price, and the magic books that influenced them. The exhibition explores the staging of classic tricks such as pulling rabbits out of hats, sawing women in half and dismembered talking heads, right through to cigarette box magic tricks and parlour magic. Discover how sleight of hand and illusions staged in top theatres have been used to create mystery and entertainment in society and how it transferred to the home, and even to the Tommies fighting in the trenches of WWI.

Through five interconnected themes ('Magic’s Spell on Society', 'Magic and innovation', 'Masters of Magic and their Influence', 'Harry Price and his Magical Library', 'Magic for All'), the exhibition explores how magic has remained a mainstay of popular culture in the western world, how its secrets have been kept and revealed, and how magicians have innovated to continue to surprise and enchant their audiences. Each theme features some of the most important books in the history of magic, alongside lesser-known works celebrating a range of genres in magic publishing.

The exhibition displays 60 items in Senate House Library’s ‘Harry Price Library of Magical Literature’, gifted by Harry Price himself, former Vice-President of the Magic Circle (and first Chair of the BFI), to the Library in 1936. See: www.senatehouselibrary.ac.uk.

The festival shares exceptional arts experiences across East England and collaborates with artists – from down the road and around the world – to explore the unique physical and cultural identities of the city and country and to make art which is contemporary, international and audience-centred. This year's festival features three magic related performances:
Vincent Gambini’s The Chore of Enchantment combines deadpan reflections with jaw-dropping sleight of hand magic to expertly play with our understandings of deception, artifice and theatrical make-believe.
Fake Magic features some of the most daring, alternative and cutting edge magicians working in the UK today, presenting magicians who offer a different approach to conjuring.
Bells and Spells by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin with Aurélia Thierrée, making its UK premiere, follows Aurélia’s peculiar journey as an incurable kleptomaniac who is at the mercy of the objects she steals. Using ethereal imagery, unpredictable props and enchanting dance, this performance blends the wonderful with the strange in a surreal world of humour and illusion.

Harbour Sleights - Aberdeen

30th August

Illusionists to conjure up cash for Aberdeen Lifeboats, Tivoli Theatre, Aberdeen, 30th August 2019. From the organisers: For one night only, Aberdeen Lifeboat and Aberdeen Magical Society bring you ‘Harbour Sleights’, the biggest magic show to come to Aberdeen in decades – and it’s all to raise funds for local lifeboats. The two-hour show at the city’s Tivoli Theatre on Friday 30th August will showcase the north-east’s top magicians and will comprise grand illusions, magic, sleight of hand, mind reading and escapology. Aberdeen Lifeboat 2nd coxswain/mechanic Cal Reed and illusionist Garry Seagraves got together to launch the event. Cal Reed said: “Making doves appear from RNLI welly boots is nothing to what these guys can do. People should come prepared to witness some quite incredible feats of magic – and all for such a good cause.” Garry Seagraves, president of Aberdeen Magical Society, added: “We can’t wait to step out onto the stage at the Tivoli this August. With such a variety of different styles of magic there really will be something for the whole family to enjoy – whether they are eight or 108! Aberdeen Magical Society has a proud tradition of supporting good causes in the north-east, and when Cal joined the society to further his passion for magic, it seemed obvious we should support Aberdeen Lifeboat.”

The Tivoli Theatre has its own place in the history of stage magic. One hundred years ago, in 1918, magician Chung Ling Soo performed his signature act at the Tivoli, catching a bullet fired from a gun, then dropping it from his mouth onto a plate. Sadly, he was killed just weeks later performing the same trick in London. Tickets, priced at £12 each, are on sale now at Aberdeen Box Office, Union Street, Aberdeen www.aberdeenperformingarts.com. From the organisers: Our free exhibition ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ will be the first-ever to focus on the relationship between magic and psychology. ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ will seek the truth about deception, ask how bias and suggestion affect our senses and decisions, and consider what it is about the human condition that means many of us believe in magic and the supernatural, even in the face of logical explanations. Artefacts from the world of magic will include those from Derren Brown, Tommy Cooper, Paul Daniels, Debbie McGee and Harry Houdini. Explore spirit photography, magic props, psychology experiments and more to see how magic works on – and in – your mind. 11th April - 15th September 2019. The Convention Team write: The first of our major headliners at Blackpool 2020 will be the incredible Uri Geller! Because of the expected interest in this man's work, we're proud to announce that this will be the first ever 'Mega-Event' that will be presented at the convention. An event so huge that it can only be presented in The Opera House Theatre. This venue would be the only place that we could possibly consider using, so that we can give enough people the chance to attend. For over an hour Uri Geller will talk about his incredible life and work, that has kept him in the public eye for nearly 50 years. Following his talk, there will be a chance to ask Uri anything that you want, during a Q&A session. This is just the first of many, many surprises that we have in store for you next year during the February 2020 Blackpool Magic Convention. To book see www.blackpoolmagicconvention.com.
