Magic Exhibition - Moyse's Hall Museum, Bury St. Edmunds

January Dates

From Saturday 3rd December, an exhibition of antique magic artifacts, from the collection of Marco Pusterla, will be on display at Moyse's Hall Museum, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. The exhibition covers three subjects: 'The Image of Magic', with a rich display of advertising material of magicians of the past, from posters, to photos, programmes and books, to the medal with the first known portrait of a magician. 'The Tools of Magic', being an eclectic collection of magic apparatus from the early 1800s, to modern times, with a strong number of Victorian and pre-Victorian objects and costumes, including one kindly loaned by Debbie McGee. Lastly, 'Chefalo, Italy's Greatest Magician', shows a number of unique props and photos from the career of this great illusionist. The exhibition will be open until 26th March 2017. The House of Magicians Family Comedy & Magic Show - Bristol

From the organisers: Two of our House Magicians will have you entertained for 90 minutes with magic and comedy! Banachek Lecture - Ulster Society of Magicians

George Bleeks writes: The Ulster Society of Magicians is delighted to announce that they will be hosting a lecture by the fabulous Banachek on 15th January. This has only been made possible through the generosity of our esteemed Honorary Member, David Meade, a fantastic mentalist himself, who has covered all the costs. The lecture will take place in the Crowne Plaza Hotel (formerly the Ramada Plaza), Shaw's Bridge, Belfast commencing at 2pm for 2.30pm, although some will be getting together from 12 noon onwards for drinks and lunch; all are welcome. Marco Pusterla will perform his unique brand of magic in the Undercroft of Moyse's Hall Museum as an event part of the 'Magic: the Entertainment of Deception' exhibition. The evening starts with refreshments in the Great Hall and a unique opportunity to explore the museum and the Magic Exhibition at night, followed by an intimate performance of magic by Marco himself in the Undercroft. Marco Pusterla, a member of The Magic Circle and former magic award winner, is one of the most respected historians on the art of magic worldwide, author of books on magic and the publisher of a magazine dedicated to the history of magic and the business of magic collecting. Now a full time professional entertainer with a very unique and endearing style his family show uses a mix of comedy magic and some very baffling illusions and also original ventriloquist routines using members of the audience and some very special puppet guests. Carmarthen Merlin Festival

24th & 25th March

Plans are underway to relaunch Carmarthen’s Merlin Festival next year as part of plans by the Welsh government to celebrate 2017 as the Year of Legends. The great wizard was said to have been born in the town while local legends have him buried in a cave on top of a hill, waiting to come back to life when the future of the country is threatened. It is hoped that magic will again be a major part of the festival with street performances planned around the town over the weekend of March 24th & 25th 2017. Three years since the last festival was held, there are hopes to build a sustainable annual event which will attract visitors from all over the UK.

Northern Magic Circle Convention

21st-23rd April

Northern Magic Circle is excited to announce its 61st annual convention. The “Northern Magic Summit” will take place in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd April 2017. The weekend will be filled with a wide variety of magic lectures, an inter-society competition, a dazzling Gala show at the 1,100 capacity Tyne Theatre & Opera House and great dealers too! Having just celebrated its 60th birthday, this event will mark the end of the diamond year of Northern Magic Circle, returning to Newcastle - the home of its very first convention in 1957. SAMS Convention 2017 - Montrose

5th, 6th & 7th May

From the organisers: The 2017 convention will be taking place at The Park Hotel, Montrose on 5th, 6th & 7th May. For the Saturday Night Gala Show the following acts have been confirmed: The local dance group from Montrose; the winner of the 2016 SAMS Stage competition, Fraser Stokes; One of our top magicians from the west coast of Scotland, George Colvan; from England, one of the UK's top children's entertainers, Shane West and also from England, performing "alternative magic" and the star off BBC3's Killer Magic, Dee Christopher. Last, but no means least, all the way from the USA, comedy magician and past winner of "Magician of the Year" at the Magic Castle, TC Tahoe. The show will be compèred by Malcolm Wilson, better known as Magic Malky.


Lecturers: TC Tahoe will be giving his "close-up lecture", Dee Christopher will be lecturing on "TV / Alternative Magic" and Shane West will be doing a lecture on "Kids Magic". Plans are afoot for Harry Robson to do a workshop on "close-up" as well. Dealers: Harry Robson, Shane West, Alan Duncan, Heidi Costumes, Jimmy Craig and Green Tea. Hotel Rooms: Hotel rooms in the Park Hotel are £90 per room per night for a double and £60 per room per night for a single. Trix in the Stix - Shropshire

Practical Magic would like to announce details of Trix in the Stix 2017, a convention for children's entertainers held in sunny Shropshire at the magnificent Lion Quays hotel near Oswestry on the Welsh border. The dates are Monday and Tuesday 22nd and 23rd May 2017. One of the Star Lecturers will be Ken Scott (photo) from the US. Ken has three times been winner of Greater Atlanta Magician of the Year and is a highly experienced entertainer, having performed his shows for over a million people.
