Number 7 - 12th August 2000

Cirque du Soleil's Quidam opens in London on December 15th playing through to January 7th 2001. "This show highlights our frailties and our anguish in the face of the new millennium that lies before us. It also underlines differences, conveying positive feelings and resentment and confronting our dreams with our nightmares. Quidam is a more scripted than previous productions; it integrates performance and theatricality to a greater degree, and draws on the emotional relationships between the performers in the troupe."

The new troupe is made up of over 50 performers, ranging in age from 12 to 50, hailing from the four corners of the globe: Canada, United States, France, Russia, Ukraine, China, Sweden, Israel and England.

Quidam set design is said to be stunning. One of the production's most spectacular features is a 120-foot overhead conveyor, whose five imposing rails take up the entire interior surface of the Big Top. This system will be used to bring performers onto the stage and to create a multitude of special effects with the various acts.

High-calibre acrobatic performance goes hand-in-hand with the magnificent beauty of the aerial, high-flying, balancing and manipulation acts. In store for spectators are the German wheel, banquine, Spanish webs, diabolo and aerial contortion. Also on the program, a hell-raising trio of crazy clowns who take cruelty to the limits while lending a touch of purity, poetry and tenderness to the show.

Although not featuring any magic acts as such Cirque du Soleil productions are always spectacular inspirational affairs - if you love performance then you'll thoroughly enjoy the work of Cirque du Soleil. 12.8.00

Wayne Dobson is the Special Guest in the Black and White Minstrel Show every Monday throughout August at the Futurist Theatre, Scarborough. Then Wayne goes on tour in the Autumn with his own show featuring special guest act Illusionists Safire (with more planned for the Spring). If you've only ever seen Wayne on TV do try and see him live. A brilliant performer and a very funny man! 12.8.00
