Number 216 - 14th August 2004
The
33rd Annual International Magic Convention will run from Friday
November 26th to Sunday 28th 2004. The whole event will now take place at
the Shaw Theatre, which is part of the
Novotel Euston, London, and is also the convention's HQ hotel; so it
should be the ideal venue. On the Saturday they'll be staging the Close-up
Competition with a £1,000 cash first prize, and every evening the same
gala show will play in the theatre allowing magicians to pick an
individual day or attend the entire convention. Booked so far: Vito Lupo
(photo - USA), David Williamson (USA), Ray Grismer (USA), Piet Forton
(Switzerland), Paul Zerdin (UK) and Noel Britten (UK) with more names to

Carnesky's
Ghost Train - a hybrid of fairground ride, magic show and live
performance devised by Marisa Carnesky featuring many illusions supervised
by Paul Kieve, has opened to rave reviews in the heart of London's East
End. The Guardian referred to it as "likely the most talked about piece of
theatre this year - The spookiest most magical fairground ride you'll ever
experience" and gave it a four star review and event 'Pick of the Week'
for London. The Observer wrote "Burlesque and aerialists, fairground
sideshows and Victorian illusions ... Totally distinctive." One of the
illusions in the show is "Amphitrite" a Victorian optical variation of
Pepper's Ghost that has not been seen for many decades. Opening night
riders included Derren Brown. The show is set to run for the next two
weeks by The Old Truman's Brewery, Brick Lane - nearest tube Aldgate East.
Shows last ten minutes and tickets are available on site for £6.00 (there
is no pre-booking). Continual shows are presented on weekdays at 6.30pm to
9.45pm, on Saturday from 2.30pm to 5.30pm and 6.30pm to 10.00pm and Sunday
from 1.30pm to 4.30pm and 6.30pm to 10.00pm. For more information visit

Peter
Lamont will be speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival
on 30th August. Dr Lamont will be speaking about his most recent book,
The Rise of the Indian Rope Trick: The Biography of a Legend, which
has received widespread critical acclaim since its publication earlier
this year. However, though Lamont himself denies it, rumours have once
again emerged that he will be performing the Indian rope trick. "When I
last spoke at a book festival, the organiser's claimed I'd be performing
the rope trick. When I found this out, I had them make a rather
embarrassing disclaimer. Mind you, I thought it was hilarious, and very
much in keeping with the tradition of misinformation surrounding the
legend." For more information

Mentorn are
currently producing a new entertainment programme for Channel Five and are
looking for candidates for "Britain's Worst Parent." They originally
contacted us to see if we could recommend any magicians and tempting
though it was we've decided to post the request as news instead! "It is a
fun entertainment show looking at family relationships and, of course our
parents aren't really Britain's worst, but they are in the eyes of their
nominator... they're embarrassing, they're just completely out of touch!
We are looking for very outgoing characters who aren't at all apologetic
for being extreme... much to their teenager's dismay. The parents will be
asked to complete a series of fun tasks, designed to find out if they
really are as bad as their children say." If you are interested in taking
part call Suki at
Mentorn on 0207 258 6809. 14.8.04 |
