Dan & Dave Buck have been added to the star-studded line-up at The Session 2013 (Cheltenham, 12th - 13th January). "They changed the way close-up magic looks, and impacted a generation of magicians. In an extremely rare UK appearance, the Buck brothers will present an all-new lecture and dazzle us with their flashy, intelligent style of legerdemain. They join Simon Aronson, Jay Sankey, John Archer, Yoann Fontyn and many other ground-breaking magicians to be announced soon. The London Festival of Magic and the International Magic Convention. Noel Britten writes: Just over 4 weeks to go before the London Festival of Magic and International Magic Convention. Unfortunately Joanie Spina and Andy Nyman have had to withdraw for the line up due to health and professional commitments, but we are delighted to announce that their places have been taken up by Anthony Owen (Head of Magic at Objective TV and Executive Producer for Derren Brown, The Real Hustle and overseer of all their Magic Shows) and Morgan and West (well known Penn and Teller 'Foolers') at the Monday session along with a soon to be announced special guest. The rest of the line up over the course of the seven days remains unchanged including Juan Tamariz (The World's Greatest Magical Thinker and Performer), Jeff McBride, Simon Drake, Lukas, Arthur Benjamin, Rick Merrill, Stephen Bargatze, Woody Aragon, Thomas Fraps, Joe Atmore, Richard McDougall, Chris Cox, Rob James, Neal Austin, Vincent Hedan, Will Houstoun, Michael Vincent, Oliver Meech, Ian Rowland, Richard Wiseman, Peter Lamont, JoJo and Noel Britten. Alongside these named performers we have additional surprises with a Special Late Night Show on the Friday Night with a performer making his first Convention appearance anywhere (and recently reviewed in a major magic magazine as 'intelligent, magical, fantastically original and funny enough to kill you from asphxiation'), a superb speciality act in the Gala Show making his UK debut (who will not be announced so you get to experience the full beauty of his act live for the first time rather than on YouTube) and is one of the most magical acts you'll ever see, and of course the Presentation of The David Berglas International Magic Award whose recipient is always a closely guarded secret until the day (previous recipients include Uri Geller, David Copperfield, Derren Brown and Juan Tamariz). The Close Up Competition has 12 performers from 6 countries including Japan, Korea and China, again with several performing in the UK for the first time. You'll be missing one of the great magical events of the year if you're not there. Tickets available from www.internationalmagic.com with the possibility of booking anything from a single evening show to the whole 7 days of magical hedonism. 13.10.12

David Blaine: What is Magic? This show is being repeated tonight, on E4. "David Blaine travels across America to perform tricks in the UK premiere of his show What Is Magic? He visits New Orleans where he carries out a money trick in front of locals, producing hundreds of dollars at their fingertips before stopping off in New York to conduct magic in front of Orlando Bloom. But the jewel in David's crown is his shot at the infamous Bullet Catch; a trick which sees a 22 calibre bullet being fired at point blank range directly at the magician, who then has to catch the bullet in a small metal cup held in his mouth. The stunt is filmed using Phantom Camera technology which shoots 10,000 frames per second so that not a fraction of the action is missed." 10pm on Saturday 13th October, see TV Magic. The Order of the Magi (Manchester) presents an evening with Richard Cadell on Tuesday 23rd October at The Irish World Heritage Centre M8 8UF (Map) commencing at 8pm. Richard is an entertainment entrepreneur and magician, in fact a former Young Magician of the Year and is best known for being the hand of Sooty since 1999. He also runs “the largest amusement park in the South West of England”, Fun City in Brean (Somerset). In June 2008, Sooty’s 60th anniversary, Richard bought the rights through his new company Cadells Limited. As well as touring with a new live show, reusing a script written by Matthew Corbett (son of the originator Harry Corbett) Richard has proposed three new TV shows for the brand, including a sitcom type format – similar to how previous Sooty shows have been made – featuring the gang working in a handyman agency, a studio-based live variety show and a pre-school game show. I am sure Richard’s success story will prove to be very interesting and entertaining. Door charge for non members. Directions on www.orderofthemagi.org.uk. Geoffrey Newton PRO. 13.10.12

At any time hold out the spectator's hands and produce, from nowhere, a block of ice, in their hands! This is stunning magic that is sure to be a reputation maker! Imagine taking a coin, having it signed and without any funny moves, freezing it into an ice cube. This is all made possible using Keiron Johnson's gimmick holder that allows you, for the first time produce the same block of ice multiple times during walkaround performances. Keiron has been using this in his act for many years and is finally releasing the method, technique and most importantly the special gimmick for the first time. A real reputation making routine. Sleights of Mind: What the neuroscience of magic reveals about our brains. What can magic tell us about ourselves and our daily lives? If you subtly change the subject during an uncomfortable conversation, did you know you're using attentional 'misdirection', a core technique of magic? And if you've ever bought an expensive item you'd sworn never to buy, you were probably unaware that the salesperson was, like an accomplished magician, a master at creating the 'illusion of choice'. Leading neuroscientists Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde meet with magicians from all over the world to explain how the magician's art sheds light on consciousness, memory, attention, and belief. As the founders of the new discipline of NeuroMagic, they combine cutting-edge scientific research with startling insights into the tricks of the magic trade. By understanding how magic manipulates the processes in our brains, we can better understand how we work - in fields from law and education to marketing, health and psychology - for good and for ill.
