Make
Christmas Magical. This Christmas, 4,000 homeless people will spend their
festive period with Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people, at
one of its temporary Crisis at Christmas centres across London, Newcastle and
Edinburgh. Crisis at Christmas centres are positive, bustling places where
guests have access to healthcare, podiatry, massage, haircuts and a whole range
of activities that they may miss out on the rest of the year, provided by more
than 8,000 volunteers. Entertainment is a really important part of what we
offer, as the chance to see and participate in performance helps our guests
regain confidence, build self esteem and shake off the depression or frustration
homelessness causes. This year we’re looking for something a little bit…
different! If you’re able to give up some time between 23 – 29 December to make
Christmas that bit more magical for our guests then we’d love to hear from you.
You can find out more and register on the Crisis Website:

"This is a wonderful, wonderful book, as well as one that resonates with me very
much personally. I feel a slight voyeuristic guilt being allowed in as much as
this, into his hidden world, but also the joy of seeing so lucidly before me
what seems now to be the ONLY way to present card material. Where the performer
is all and there's no card 'plot' to follow along with. This is a unique delight
to be reading." Derren Brown. Written by magic’s most experienced author
Richard Kaufman. Foreword by Juan Tamariz. Afterword by Max Maven. Includes 3
feature-packed DVDs. This title is now nearly sold out.

Bobby
Bernard 1931-2014. Bobby Bernard died peacefully on Monday 10th November
2014. I first met Bobby in the 70s by chance at the International Magic Studio
in Brewer Street. I was probably about 13 and was about to buy a Tenyo
'Penetration Frame' and he was trying to persuaded me not to. Needless to say I
didn't listen and went ahead and bought it, later realising that he was quite
right. It really wasn't a very good trick! That was my first encounter with
Bobby Bernard. Years later, when I worked in the Magic department of Hamley's
Toy Shop, Bobby would often pop in (for an hour or two!) and talk magic and
auditions. As a character actor he had some great parts over the years. Bobby
had a wealth of magical knowledge and a real passion not just for 'magic', but
more so perhaps, for the performance of magic. I'll never forget his vivid,
excited, description of Jeff McBride's act that he'd just seen, long before we'd see it here in the
UK. Bobby was one of British Magic's great characters. The Funeral of Bobby
Bernard (Bernard Samuel Lerner) MIMC and Honorary Life Member The Magic Circle
will be held at The West Chapel, Golders Green Crematorium, Hoop Lane, London
NW11 7NL on Friday 28th November 2014 at 1pm. No flowers by request of the
family. DT.
