Mark
Elsdon London Society of Magicians lecture. Daniel Young writes: On Tuesday
the 11th of October Mark Elsdon will come to the LSM to present his lecture
"Miracles Take A Little Longer". It is comprised of Mark teaching original
magic and mentalism, plus the techniques and methods he uses behind the scenes
to achieve maximum impact and really affect people with his performances.
Including: Walkaround card and coin magic that can be performed under any
conditions. Close-up mentalism, for those times when you want your performance
to have more resonance and leave a lasting impression on people. Stand-up
mentalism, that is short on process and long on entertainment, focusing on the
interaction with the audience, this time-tested material is ready to go straight
into your act. Plus a whole section on his critically-acclaimed ‘Conversation As
Mentalism' material, which includes killer mentalism effects that you can
perform anytime, anyplace and without any props! And finally, there is a
performance-only of Mark’s all-time favourite creation: Limelight – the
incredible routine which makes an absolute star of the spectator. This is a
must-see performance! Note: Whilst there is some very minimal crossover with
Mark’s Penguin or Murphy’s lectures (the couple of tricks everyone simply must
see live!) this lecture features a ton of new material, plus full explanations
of several of Mark’s marketed effects. Held at
Davenport's Magic
Studio, London, and hosted by
London Society of
Magicians. Tuesday, October 11th. Doors 6.30pm; starts at 7pm. Free for
members, or £12 for non-members.

Horizon: Is Seeing Believing?
Series exploring topical scientific issues. Horizon explores the strange and
wonderful world of illusions - and reveals the tricks they play on our senses
and why they fool us. We show how easy it is to trick your sense of taste by
changing the colours of food and drink, explain how what you see can change what
you hear, and see just how unreliable our sense of colour can be. But all this
trickery has a serious purpose. It's helping scientists to create a new
understanding of how our senses work - not as individual senses, but connected
together. It holds the intriguing possibility that one sense could be mapped
into another. Tuesday 11th October on BBC 4. See

Eoin
Smith awarded the Jocky Scott Trophy for Entertainment by Aberdeen Magical
Society. Eoin Smith was awarded the Jocky Scott Trophy for Entertainment by
the Aberdeen Magical Society following a closely fought competition. Eoin, who
has lifted the trophy twice before in 2011 and 2013, fought off tough
competition from five other magicians to be crowned the winner with a routine
mixing his passions for magic and music. During his performance, he was able to
reveal a song merely thought of by an audience member. Eoin said "I’ve been
working on this routine for well over a year, so I was really pleased that it
was well-received. This competition is really special as it is judged by both my
peers and by members of the public, so it was a real honour to be awarded the
trophy." The Jocky Scott Trophy for Entertainment, named after a popular former
member of the society, is one of three annual competitions held by Aberdeen
Magical Society, and was first awarded in 1985. Aberdeen Magical Society was
founded in 1926 and this year celebrates its 90th anniversary. As one of the
most active magical societies in the country, it boasts a membership ranging
from full time professionals to hobbyists, and all those with a genuine interest
in magic are welcome to join
