"I've always loved great magicians... they're the double glazing salesmen of the entertainment business." Vincent Swan, watching a video of David Copperfield vanishing the Statue of Liberty in BBC Two's 'White Gold' last week (iPlayer). This week, from The MagicWeek Video Archive, the full Statue of Liberty show for anyone who's never seen it, that magically turned the name David Copperfield from a Dickensian character into a world famous magician. Early Copperfield was all very schmaltzy, but brilliantly executed none the less. The dancing cane/levitation sequence to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in this show (15 minutes in) demonstrating why Copperfield is rated as one of the world's greatest ever magicians. Magicseen Issue 75 July 2017. Editor Mark Leveridge writes: The summer edition of the UK's only independent magic magazine is now out and we are excited to be able to offer our readers not one, but two huge feature articles. The first is a world exclusive interview with David Copperfield in which we get up close and personal with a man who is still one of the world's busiest and best entertainers. This alone would make for a great issue, but rather than rest on our laurels, we also include a fascinating interview with Penn & Teller, who have been appearing in the UK recently. The July issue also provides you with great advice from a PR professional on how to use this method of self-promotion, Jonathan Goodwin explains why he believes that Robert Houdin's assertion that a 'magician is an actor playing the part of a magician' is wrong, and Christopher T. Magician explains how children's entertainers can treat their young stage helpers better. Plus... we talk to Steve Rowe and David Kwong, provide you with honest comments on a whole range of the latest products, offer two effects to learn in the Masterclass and more. You can get your hands on this great edition now as part of a 1 or 2 year printed copy or download subscription, as the first of a pay-as-you-go open ended sub, or just as a single printed or download copy, from www.magicseen.co.uk. 1.7.17

Ian Keable at the Cotswold Magical Society. Peter Kidd writes: Visitors are very welcome when the Cotswold Magical Society welcomes Ian Keable to the Hucclecote Community Centre in Gloucester on Wednesday 5th July. Ian has been a full-time magician since 1990, working principally in Comedy Clubs and at Corporate events. He cut his teeth working in the tough world of the comedy clubs, working alongside comedians such as Lee Evans, Frank Skinner, Harry Hill, Jo Brand and Graham Norton. The fact that he was able to hold his own with these brilliant comedians while presenting his own brand of comedy magic is a tribute to his skills of interacting with audiences. Ian will be talking to us about close-up, cabaret and Dickens. Yes, that Dickens. Charles Dickens was an amateur conjuror for around eight years of his life. His interest was sparked by seeing an Austrian conjuror called Ludwig Dobler who came over to London in 1842. Ian will tell us more, as well as performing and explaining several tricks from his professional repertoire to illustrate not only how to, but also how not to, present close-up and cabaret magic. Everyone welcome from 7.30pm, £10 on the door for non-members. www.cotswoldmagic.co.uk. 1.7.17

Little Big Shots - now casting Series 2. From the producers: Dawn French is back for a second exciting series of the extraordinary Little Big Shots. It’s the primetime entertainment show that celebrates young talent from all over the world. Open to 3 to 13 year olds, this is not a competition, there are no prizes and no judges – it’s simply a chance to showcase awe-inspiring skills, the downright cute and the fabulously funny. From dancing demons to sassy stand-ups, musical maestros to impressive impressionists… and more, we just want the best that the UK has to offer. You don’t need to have a professional act (but we love those too); we just want to spend time in the company of children who have something they love doing and want to share it with Dawn on the Little Big Shots stage.
