Michael
Bailey MIMC (with Gold Star). Scott Penrose MIMC, President, The
Magic Circle, writes: It is with deep sadness that we learned of the
passing of Past President Michael Bailey MIMC (with Gold Star) on 6
November 2017.
Michael was President of the Society between 1998 and 2003 and provided
a pivotal role in helping to raise the substantial funds required to
purchase and build our first fully owned headquarters in Stephenson Way,
Euston, opened in 1998.
Michael had been a professional magician since 1971 and, coupled with
his background in advertising, is acknowledged as being one of the key
figures in adapting magic for a corporate market. Having been at the
forefront of his chosen field in the UK, he published his book “The
Magic Business” which soon became the authoritative guide for working
magic in all aspects trade shows, product launches and business
seminars. He was also the author of “The Magic Circle: Performing Magic
Through the Ages” and co-edited the centennial history, “Circle Without
End: The Magic Circle 1905-2005”.
In addition to his contribution towards helping members of The Magic
Circle achieve their seemingly unachievable dream of owning their own
Headquarters in London for the first time, Michael was an Honorary Life
member of the Society, was awarded The Maskelyne for Services to British
Magic in 2003 and in 2005 was given The Gold Medal for exemplary
services to the Society, an honour that has only been awarded ten times
since its inception in 1926.
The legacy of Michael Bailey is something to which members of the
Society past, present and future will be forever indebted.

cocoon-like space, in which a spectator could watch a magic show under

Jim Krenz - UK Lecture Tour. Magic Lectures UK write: We are proud to
present Jim Krenz with his first UK lecture tour. Spending fifteen years
working for Jay and Francis Marshall at Magic Inc and being a regular
performer at Schulien’s Restaurant in Chicago his experience has lead
him to win the Most Valuable Participant award at the FFFF convention.
Jim has studied with Ed Marlo, Jim Ryan, Tony Andruzzi, Don Alan, Eugene
Burger, Slydini, Tommy Wonder and Juan Tamariz. “When I was a child I
was fascinated with the magical emotion that I felt upon watching
magicians. I could not comprehend anything, what I would see was
impossible; now I love to feel this emotion. It does not occur very
often. Normally, I can see behind the curtain, I see the 'hidden'
secrets and the mechanics. But from time to time a magician performs a
trick, or several tricks, that seem impossible and the magical emotion
returns. This happens to me with Jim Krenz.” Juan Tamariz.

Andy
Robertson Peterhead Prison Museum Cell Escape. Stuart Burrell
writes: The 31st of October 2017 saw the first Jail Cell escape
performed by an Escapologist in Scottish history when Andy Robertson
conducted a Cell Escape at Peterhead Prison Museum under test conditions
made famous by legendary Escapologists Harry Houdini and David DeVal. Mr
Robertson was challenged by Rebecca Taylor, representing the DeVal
family to escape from one of cells at the museum as well as escaping
from regulation handcuffs and leg manacles provided by a third party.
World Record Holding Locksmith and member of The Magic Circle, Chris
Gower, was in attendance to confirm the validity of the locks used.
The test conditions required Mr Robertson to
be subject to a full examination by a medical professional and subject
to a strip search and that the cell was searched and examined
beforehand. Mr Robertson was then required to be locked in the cell,
whilst near naked. The Escape was covered by STV2’s “Live at Five” show,
with interviews with Mr Robertson and members of the public that had
paid to be present. Mr Robertson escaped in 8 minutes and 12 seconds,
pausing only to put his clothes back on and secure the handcuffs to the
door of the cell. The escape was significant as not only was it a
personal first for Mr Robertson and the first such escape by an Escape
Artist in Scotland, but it also represented the first time that the
Houdini / DeVal test method had been applied to a cell which had been in
active use with the Prison Service after the turn of the millennium. A
video of the escape and the buildup can be viewed on
YouTube.
