Derren
Brown Showman - The all-new live show for 2020. Derren Brown returns to the
stage with his brand-new live show in 2020. The multi award-winning master of
mind control and psychological illusion, Derren Brown, is at his very best on
stage. His one-man shows have received wide critical acclaim and more Olivier
wins and nominations than any other in history. Now with his first brand new
theatre show in five years, Derren Brown returns to astonish and amaze audiences
up and down the country. The content of Showman remains a closely-guarded
secret, but if you’ve seen him before, you know you’re in for a powerhouse
treat. "All I can reveal is that the show will ultimately be about you, the
audience member, because that’s what I find most interesting. There are places
I’d like to take the audience where we haven’t been before. I always aim to have
it deliver more than you’d expect. I’m excited to be at the starting point of
that process. Getting it on the road will be my favourite part of the year."
Derren Brown.

South
Tyneside International Festival of Magic. From the organisers: Here
is the 8th Act announcement for South Tyneside International Festival of
Magic (11-13th October 2019), another UK first, from Spain, Xulio
Merino. Xulio Merino discovered sponge ball magic in 2010. He’s played
with them obsessively since then, and if we add to that the great magic
scene of the Spanish region of Galicia, that’s what has made him a
master in sponge balls. In just a few years, his techniques, theories,
and effects have reinvented the perception of this overlooked object,
and they’ve set the ground for the study of sponge ball magic that
started with Albert Goshman, Frank Garcia and many other masters of
porosity. 1st Place Close-up French National Championship 52nd edition
FFAP. Ascanio Award 2019 Magician of the Year SEI Madrid. “Xulio’s
the new DaOrtiz, but with sponge balls. He’s a technically revolutionary
showman, and a surreal clown." Kiko Pastur.
In his lecture he offers completely revolutionary material. New ideas
with sponge balls that reinvent the basic techniques and set the ground
for more advanced moves. You’ll also discover a ton of new effective and
practical routines created by a magician who has tested all his material
before lay audiences thousands of times. He joins Olivier Macia (Olmac),
Mario (The Maker Magician) Marchese, Mike Pisciotta, Maga Gisell,
Richard Jones, Mark Shortland and Steve Hewlett. Registrations are
limited to 150 so everyone gets a close-up view! Only £65 for the full 3
days! To book visit

Keelan
Leyser on The Magicians' Podcast. Richard Young writes: The BBC
discovered Keelan Leyser’s talents when he was the subject of a
documentary aged just 14 and was hotly tipped to win The Young Magician
of the Year. In fact he didn’t make the final and in this interview he
discusses how the hype around his talent at such a young age was a
detriment to his progress. He went on to forge a career as a
quick-change artist with his girlfriend Charlotte and gives an amazing
insight into this corner of our industry that so few perform in. He also
discusses the difficulties of working with your partner and what he did
when the bubble burst and the act stopped being booked; and talks in
detail about his new foray into technology and iPad magic, and his
recent move across the Atlantic to Las Vegas. Plus "What's Going On?"
with Alan Hudson. The Magicians' Podcast, listen now, via

The Psychic Project,
London, 12th-22nd June 2019. From the producers: A mind-reading show
based on the true story of the Cold War’s psychic spies. In 1972, the
Cold War took an unusual turn. The CIA learnt that Russia was investing
in mind-control research and achieving some remarkable results. Not
wanting to be left behind, US scientists began a secret project to train
civilians as psychic spies: stealing secrets, manipulating memories and
finding out if thoughts can kill. Drawing on 100,000 pages of
declassified documents, David Narayan attempts the CIA’s experiments,
seeing if a modern audience can use the same techniques.
"Fascinating" World Magic Review. "Inexplicable" Daily Info.
"As disturbing as it is astonishing" The Oxford Times. Tickets

A
Deadly Way to Make a Living: The Lamentable Fate of Chung Ling Soo,
Marvellous Chinese Conjuror. "Brian Lead has searched diligently for
untapped primary sources, including taped interviews with a stagehand
and one of the men who shot at Chung Ling Soo on that fateful night in
1918 when he was killed on stage attempting to catch two bullets. He has

routine. All this yields a fascinating account which brings to light a

Crazy Car Registrations
by Eddie Burke. Mr E Enterprises write: We have all seen them and some of us even have one –
those crazy car registration plates such as H16H 5!
Showing a large A4 size laminated picture of a comical-looking red car,
you explain that you cannot yet drive it on the roads as you need to
have a crazy number plate for your rather crazy car. The car picture is
slipped into a secure card holder where the back of it is in full view
at all times.
You show several Crazy Car Registration plates each one printed and
laminated. Now the laughter starts as you show them and call them out,
registration numbers such as ID10T, C4R 51CK and so forth, they really do
cause much amusement as you display them one at a time.
Following this, a spectator chooses one of the registration plates in a
very fair manner, you explain that magicians register their cars by
magic, and the picture is now shown again with the very same chosen
number plate has magically appeared permanently printed on your car! (Note: The registration mark can be changed for repeat performances.)
Mentalists: This canny routine can also be used as a prediction effect,
by positioning the car picture back out and in full view, and then
having fun with the number plates as explained; having one chosen and
finally showing that the chosen Crazy Car Registration mark is the one
on your prediction picture! For more info and to order visit

Pat
Page Evening at the Anglian Magic Society, Tuesday 21st May at 7.30pm.
The White Horse Inn, The Street, Trowse, Norwich NR14 8ST (Map).
www.theanglianmagicsociety.uk. From the organisers: "Janette (Pat Page's
daughter) talks about his career in magic, about how he first got
started and what he did. Patrick was unbelievably modest about his
achievements and much of what he did we only found out about after he
died by speaking to his fans. Every time that we do a presentation we
learn something new. No doubt that will be the case in Norwich. Janette
talks about what it was like to grow up in a magic household and meet
lots of famous magicians who stayed at her house. Most of them sadly are
now no longer with us. We share private photos of Patrick throughout his
career. I (Philip) talk about Patrick’s literary and teaching career,
and particularly about The Big Book of Magic and Magic Page by Page. I
talk about Patrick’s expulsion from the IBM. I did most of the
photography in Magic Page by Page (I am a photographer). Well, the
photographs during the latter part of his career. I talk about Patrick
Page Magic and how it came about. Neither Janette or I ever intended to
set up a magic dealership. We show a lot of private video footage of
Patrick performing. We will bring along our stock of items of Patrick
Page inventions, books and DVDs and make them available for purchase at
special prices. But and this is very important, the talk is not a sales
talk. It is a talk about Patrick. We want your members to know more
about Patrick and his contribution to the world of magic. Come along and
enjoy this very special evening not to be missed."

Daniel
and Sylvia Lynch (Stromboli and Sylvia).
Alan Horne writes: Sad news that Daniel and Sylvia Lynch, Stromboli and Sylvia, have both
passed away within a few weeks of each other. They were great showmen, who
with their fire eating and sword swallowing act
toured the world, working in
many major theatres and appearing in several films.
A trip to their home wasn't complete without a visit to the cellar, to see
his latest finds which would include: shrunken heads, taxidermy,
curiosities, oddities and freak-show items.
They had a collection of Titanic memorabilia and a set of replica crown
jewels, which they would take out and do talks with.
Whenever you popped round for a few minutes (which could turn out to be
hours) you were made welcome and I'm sure I'm not alone in expressing my
gratitude for the help and advice I received over the years.
