The
Amazing Johnathan Documentary - one night only Q&A with director Ben
Berman and Louis Theroux. Ahead of its nationwide UK release on 22nd
November 2019, Dogwoof have released a UK trailer for
The Amazing Johnathan Documentary. Benjamin Berman’s acclaimed
feature directorial debut starts as the story of The Amazing Johnathan,
an extraordinary magician who built a career out of shock and deception
in the 1980s, which transforms into a bizarre story about the
unravelling of the documentarian.
After Johnathan is diagnosed with a terminal heart condition and given
one year to live, he’s forced to retire his act. Cut to three years
later: Johnathan is not dead, much to everyone’s amazement, and
documentarian Ben Berman films the illusionist on an epic comeback tour.
But as their mutual journey kicks off, Johnathan drops a bombshell that
sends the film spiraling into uncertainty. Embracing this unforeseen
obstacle, Ben delves deeper to determine what is truth and what is
illusion. Built into the heart of this quick-witted and highly meta
story is an indelible commentary on the process and ethics of making a
documentary today. Issues of negotiation and access become the central
threads that reveal, and further cloud, our understanding of this
elusive protagonist. A one night only Q&A with director Ben Berman and
Louis Theroux will be broadcast in cinemas across the country on 19th
November 2019. Tickets available via:

Richard
Jones: Escape 2020 Tour Dates announced, with more dates to be added over
the coming weeks. From the promoters: "Richard Jones was the winner of Britain's
Got Talent and is a British Army soldier as well as one of the world’s greatest
magicians in The Magic Circle. Having recently had audiences on Britain’s Got
Talent: The Champions completely captivated, Richard is extending his
sell-out tour of the UK earlier this year. Therefore due to popularity, new
dates in 2020 have been announced where the mesmerising Lance Corporal will
confirm exactly what made him the stand out act to win Britain’s top talent show
in 2016... And still the only magician to have won the show. After gasps of
emotion shown on the ITV1 programme, much of the audience this month were
reduced to tears when Richard paid tribute to his veteran mentor, Fergus Anckorn
– a fellow magician who died last year before his 100th birthday. On his
extended tour of Escape, Richard endeavours to break the boundaries of the mind
with his ‘magic with meaning’, debuting a further twist on some of his newest,
awe-inspiring magic. In heart-warming memory of Fergus, he will be recreating
some of his dear friend’s most incredible tricks too - some of which the
legendary soldier only ever taught Richard himself."

The
New Mark Leveridge Club Lecture - now booking. Mark Leveridge is pleased to announce that he
is now taking bookings for 2020/21 for his brand new E-Club Pro - Live lecture
and writes: "Over the last few years I've been touring the magic club circuit presenting
a 'pure' lecture in which everything is properly performed and fully explained
with no associated product sales attached. This means that all the
magic included in the lecture uses either readily available apparatus or that
which can be
easily made up - the lecture is therefore not a thinly disguised dealer dem! The
latest version of the E-Club Pro - Live lecture for 2020/21 has completely
different content from previous versions and provides straightforward magic for
strolling, close-up, stand-up and mentalism." Everything has been taken from
Mark's online club E-Club Pro which means that the material has previously only
been seen by members. For further information interested clubs should either go
to www.markleveridge.co.uk/lectures or call Mark on 01392 490565. Photo

The
Magic of Laurel and Hardy, a talk by Kevin Doig at Bexley Magic Society.
Wednesday 16th October. Kevin Doig is the chairman of Bexley Magic Society and
has been a fan of movie comic legends Laurel and Hardy for as long as he has
been into magic. And that’s a very long time! He is delighted to give his talk
on The Magic of Laurel and Hardy to Bexley Magic Society on 16th October. The
full evening talk was put together for the Zodiac Magic Club after their
president saw Kevin give two shorter presentations at The Magic Circle.
During the talk, which will be illustrated by clips from Laurel and Hardy films,
Kevin will show how innovations in comedy from these comedians are still an
influence on magicians today; will show some very rarely seen footage from a
foreign language Laurel and Hardy film including the full act of a star magician
at that time; talk about what is known as Stan Laurel’s “white magic”; show
parts of a movie in which a famous American magician was billed as their
co-star; show the boys using a magic prop widely available from magic dealers;
Laurel and Hardy performing a cod magic act in a Hollywood Revue and, in the
grand finale, talk about how a Laurel and Hardy movie probably influenced one of
today’s greatest and best tricks used by hundreds of magicians to this day.
Zodiac told Kevin it was one of the most interesting talks they have seen.
Equity Variety Branch told Kevin it was in the top two of all the talks they
have had (beaten only by an entire talk presented by puppets!). Kevin hopes you
will all want to be there! Visiting magicians welcome. Entrance fee £10 on the
night. See
www.bexleymagic.org.uk for details.
