Michael J Fitch writes: After a tough couple of years for the industry, The Magic Circle is back with flair and what better way to celebrate than by welcoming some of the best magic talent from around the world. It's always been a struggle with space to do something like this, but the recently refurbished Wesley Hotel next door to our headquarters provided the perfect opportunity to extend the dealers hall and, of course, provide the all important late night magic sessions and after-party. Britain's Got Talent tonight at 8pm. Ant and Dec return with the nationwide talent search this evening, with judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams giving their verdicts on the acts. Kidology UK, the midweek convention for children’s entertainers, returns with a great lineup. Organiser Alec Powell writes: It will be held at The Austin Sports and Social Club, Birmingham B31 2SF on Tuesday 20th September 2022 from 9am. Featuring: Dealers Hall, Auction and evening entertainment and cabaret with Jezo. Plus the UK Children's Entertainer of the Year Competition on Wednesday 21st September, all at the same venue. Speakers at the convention are Steve Hewlett, Jezo, Magic Touch JJ and Jonathan, Sammy Brooks, Steve Dimmer, Darron Woodward, Miraiker Wallace and Lisa Oakley. The Science of Magic Association 2022 Conference. From the organisers: We plan to hold a gala show on the evening of July 20th, followed by two full conference days on July 21st and 22nd. We’re looking forward (with cautious optimism) to once again bringing together academics, researchers and magicians from around the world and featuring top keynote speakers, with presentations and poster sessions about the latest science of magic research.

This event will take place in-person at Goldsmiths University of London, and we’ll also be integrating some of the virtual tools and options to provide some free virtual access to selected events on the day. Various recordings will be posted online afterwards.

Keynote Speakers: Prof Sophie Scott - Director of the Speech Communication Lab at UCL.

MagiCon 2022. James Hobart writes: Back in 2001 The Magic Circle sent a party to the Irish Convention and put on special events during the weekend. This year they’re back and the Sunday Gala Show has been branded "Stars of The Magic Circle" - featuring Vice President Katherine Rhodes, Oliver Tabor, BGT runner-up Jamie Raven and locals Alan Kennedy and Rodd Hogg. The show, in Belvoir Studio Theatre on 1st May, is selling well but a few tickets are still available online.

Katherine will also be doing a presentation on The Magic Circle and will be joining Oliver, Tom Crosbie and Fritz "with a Z" in a Close-up Gala Show on the Saturday morning, introduced by USM President George Bleeks. The latter three will also be lecturing over the weekend, as will George Firehorse and Chris Congreave.

Friday was the booking deadline for the Saturday night dinner and Gala Show but the Balmoral Hotel have agreed to continue to take last minute bookings for another week to 22nd April. Martin Peirce Lecture - The Order of The Magi, Manchester - 26th April. Secretary Mike Sharples writes:  The Order of The Magi is pleased announce that our first lecture for this year will take place at the Irish World Heritage Centre, Irish Town Way at 8pm on the 26th April and is The Helen Moran Memorial Lecture. This will be performed by Martin Peirce and is called Easy, Effective and Entertaining Magic Lecture. Martin is a professional magician, creator of effects, author of books and also a writer of numerous magazine articles for magical publications. Following on from his highly popular 5 star rated EEE Alakazam Academy he now has produced an exciting new lecture that will consist of easy to do, effective and most importantly entertaining magic.

 

There will be something in it for everyone with magic involving cards, money, mentalism and everyday objects. All the routines will be fully detailed so all members and attendees can go and perform some magical miracles virtually straight away. There will also be a chance to purchase some fantastic unique magic on the night and ask any questions you may have regarding these entertaining routines.

Mike Gancia. Donald Bevan writes: Mike Gancia (Michael Gillam) passed away early Tuesday morning 5th April after a long illness, days short of his 88th birthday. A Past President of I.B.M. British Ring, Past President British Magical Society (twice), BMS Honorary Life Member with Gold Medal (one of only five in the Society's 117 year history), MIMC with Gold Star. Mike was a popular and active performer and lecturer, with a wealth of magical knowledge he was always willing to share. Another old friend who I first met in the early 1950s, has gone but never forgotten.

 

The funeral will take place on Tuesday 3rd May at 3.15pm at Lodge Hill Crematorium, Weoley Park Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham South, B29 5AA. 16.4.22
