Number 1140 - Saturday 30th April 2022

The Magic Circle History Day is taking place on Saturday 10th September 2022 at The Magic Circle Headquarters in London (the day before The Magic Circle's inaugural One Day Convention on the 11th). The day will feature notable speakers from the UK and abroad, a buffet lunch at The Wesley Hotel (next door), a sale of collectable books and an opportunity to mingle with fellow historians and collectors.

The History Day organisers, Marco Pusterla (Editor of Ye Olde Magic Mag, a magazine for magic historians and collectors) and Ian Keable (professional magician, speaker, author of the recent The Century of Deception) admit they have a hard act to follow. For the past 43 years, up to 2019, the event was run by Professor Edwin Dawes, considered to be the foremost living magic historian, and Peter Lane, the Head Librarian of The Magic Circle for many years.

"Our aim is to continue with the well-established format", said Ian, "of booking top magic historians from all over the world. However, we also want to encourage younger male and female participants to attend and discover the fascination of many aspects of magic history. We will therefore be drawing on an exciting pool of new speakers, including those better known for magic performing than their academic work." Venue: The Magic Circle, 12 Stephenson Way, Euston, London NW1 2HD. 9.30am to 6pm, Saturday 10th September 2022. Tickets: Non-members £49, members £44, online via www.tmcshop.squarespace.com/store.

CollectingMagicBooks.com are excited to announce the first in a series of three books by J. N. Maskelyne is now available to pre-order. Modern Spiritualism was first published in 1876 and this full facsimile hardback reproduction features custom endpapers, a photographic frontispiece and illustrated boards. It is a strictly limited edition of just 500 copies.

Modern Spiritualism was published during a time of huge expansion for the spiritualist movement. In the book Maskelyne gave his account of the most famous mediums of the time, exposing their trickery. It is a rare record produced when many of the first generation of spiritualist mediums were still active.

Maskelyne discussed the roots of modern spiritualism and the stories and trickery of mediums including the Fox Sisters, Daniel Douglas Home, the Davenport Brothers, Anna Eva Fay and many others. He exposed the true methods behind supposed table rapping, spirit painting, spirit writing, dark séances, spirit photography and supernatural healing. Though commercially published and critically well received, the book did not receive a second edition and, despite its importance to the history of conjuring and the battle between magicians and mediums, it has remained out of print for almost 150 years.

Modern Spiritualism is available exclusively from CollectingMagicBooks.com and will be released on the 5th of May. To see detailed photos and to pre-order your copy for £30 visit www.collectingmagicbooks.com
