Laughs & Gasps at The Brentwood Theatre, Essex. From the promoter: Join us at The Brentwood Theatre for an evening of "Laughs and Gasps" featuring two of the UK’s finest theatrical performers. Kicking the evening off in a unique way is Nick Nolan, who has already notched-up over a decade of professional experience playing to capacity crowds at public events, private functions and various well known theatres around the country. Greatly influenced by the legendary comedians, magicians and ventriloquists of yesteryear, Nolan’s performance pays homage to the Variety Theatre and TV stars of the past, whilst at the same time raising the expectations of a modern day audience. Specialising in ventriloquism, puppetry, magic and zany physical comedy, he is also expert at accents, character vocals and impressions.

The second half will be led by the utterly charming Scott Penrose, a past President of The Magic Circle and a multi-award winning magician. He is a magician who is part performer, part engineer and part magic historian. Amongst varied contemporary and Victorian magical mysteries, Scott will present Robert-Houdini’s Marvellous Orange Tree from 1840 and John Nevil Maskelyne’s Psycho, the mind reading automaton from 1882, returning to the British stage for the first time in over 100 years. As a designer and builder of magic, Scott has produced miracles for a number of Derren Brown’s touring stage shows and has worked for many stage productions in London’s West End and on Broadway. 10th June. Recommended for ages 12+ For more information and to book visit www.brentwood-theatre.co.uk.

A New Messiah by Tony Nicholson. From the publishers: Tony Nicholson’s new political thriller, A New Messiah, poses a terrifying "what if?" scenario, set in and around the world of magic. A charismatic Romanian street hustler and magician emerges in Britain as a new messiah. Serghei and his manager convince the public his magic is real and he has God-given paranormal powers of the mind. Rival magician Clive Entwhistle aims to expose and discredit him by proving his so-called powers are no more than magic tricks and sleight of hand.

Dark far-right political forces spot the potential of Serghei’s fame and usurp his hero worship for their own ends, lifting the lid on a Pandora’s box which threatens the very heart of British democracy... and opens the gates of hell. "Together we could rule the f***ing world!" Serghei’s manager couldn’t have imagined how prophetic those words would turn out to be.

Tony Nicholson is a former producer of many TV magic shows: BAFTA-winning The Quick Trick Show, Extreme Magic Extreme Danger, Wayne Dobson Close-Up, Playing Tricks and Hidden Camera Magic. A New Messiah is published by Great Northern Books and can be ordered via www.gnbooks.co.uk.

Gary was known to many within the magical community as a gifted magician, magical inventor, magic dealer and mentor. Gary has been an inspiration to many, helping them develop rewarding hobbies and even professional careers. Within Gary's trade as a talented Fabrication Welder he was equally appreciated by many that he supported, as he transferred his skills into the engineering sector of education and apprenticeship support. I know he will be sadly missed by all of his loving family, friends and colleagues. The family would appreciate privacy during this difficult time. RIP Gary.
