Shiv
Duggal 1959–2024. We regret to report the death of our dear friend
Shiv Duggal. He suffered a cardiac arrest on the 25th January and was
taken to Basildon Hospital where he was put on sedation. Unfortunately,
he could not be revived and passed away on the morning of February 1st
with his wife Amanda and family by his side.
Card magic was Shiv’s fascination and his forte. He had been a regular
at Ken Brooke’s Magic Place in Wardour Street, and a close friend of
Eric Mason. Our first meetings were in the late 1970s, at the
Marlborough Arms on the nights The Magic Circle met, but then we began
meeting every Saturday at restaurants in central London, notably Pizza
Express in Coptic Street. Ian Keable joined our merry band and others,
including J.J., Danny Buckler, Guy Hollingworth, Alex Conran, Tim Bran,
Noel Britten, Richard McDougall and Carlo Ramirez. All knew where to
find us should they be in town.
When not reading, talking, performing, or lecturing about magic, Shiv
worked in the civil service, rising to the position of Policy Advisor in
the Department of Education. Several years ago, he took early retirement
and, intrigued by hypnosis, trained as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist.
But mostly, he loved magic, a passion that extended to fantasy
literature and the thick tomes produced by authors such as Frank
Herbert. He had a prodigious memory and was a go-to guy when you wanted
to know where some move or trick was published. He had a vast library of
magic books and seemed to recall just about everything he had read. This
was all the more impressive because Shiv was dyslexic. How he managed
it, we never knew.
He was serious about card magic and happy to argue fervently over the
value of a particular card sleight, why a complicated routine is better
than a simple one, or books were better than video, but he did so with
good humour, and was wonderful company. Shiv Duggal was a kind man,
generous of spirit, a diplomat, and a steadfast friend. We miss him
greatly, as will all who knew him. Our condolences go to his family,
friends, and his wife Amanda.
