Legends of The Magic Circle - An Evening with John Styles, Monday 29th April. The Magic Circle write: A chance to spend the evening with one of Britain’s great variety performers. John Styles is not only a true magical star but an expert in many varied and extended aspects of our allied arts. He is without doubt one of the world’s leading experts on Punch & Judy, performing from parks to palaces around the world. His expertise has been utilised not only in his performance, but also in consultancy for major films and TV shows.

The evening will provide an opportunity to learn from a star of magic sharing literally a lifetime of experience. The Magic Circle is allowing non-members access to what is usually a members-only Monday night event. If you’ve been to a ‘Legends’ night before, you’ll know that the atmosphere, in both the clubroom and the theatre, is always lively and enjoyable. We’re all ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’, so to speak, and it’s a privilege to be able to learn from someone who is ‘magical royalty’. Chris Wood Lecture - South Downs Magicians. Des King writes: South Downs Magicians will be having a lecture by Chris Wood on Wednesday 1st May. Chris is a member of The Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star. He will be lecturing on some of his favourite close-up magic and has some great material to share. Jack Bedell-Pearce is Surrey’s Close-Up Magician of the Year 2024! From the organisers: On the 18th April, the Surrey Society of Magicians held their Annual Surrey Close-Up Magic Competition. The competition was judged by two lay judges and guest magic judge Sav (Ian Saville). Nine members of the Surrey Society of Magic competed this year and it was agreed that the quality of the performances across the board was the best we'd ever had. Third place went to Paul Dickson, with George Yates coming second, and the overall competition winner being Jack Bedell-Pearce, who won with a Harry Potter-themed routine.

The Mary Oberoi Comedy Award (as voted for by SSOM members) for the funniest performance was given to David Andrews. Other SSOM members who competed included: Mick Turrell; Tommy Knight; Steve McShane; Gavin Phillips and Ash Rai. The evening was compered by the very funny and talented Geoff Pescud and chief time-keeper and bong-er of the gong was Nick Frisby.
