UK
premiere of Gandini Juggling's magic-inspired Heka at Mime London, The Place,
30th January to 1st February. Gandini Juggling, the world-renowned and
much-loved contemporary circus ensemble, will give the UK premiere of its first
new show for three years at The Place, London from 30th January to 1st February
as part of Mime London.
Heka - named after the Egyptian goddess of magic - has its world premiere
in France in December and will be the Christmas show at Theatre de la Ville,
Paris, before it materialises in the UK. After The Place performances, it will
be touring until June with ten venues confirmed and more to be added. Heka
marks a departure for director Sean Gandini as he revisits the fascination with
magic which began during his childhood in Havana. Using magic as a source of
creativity and a choreographic language, he deconstructs the movements we
associate with magic to create new and unexpected juggling tricks. Two magicians
- Yann Frisch (France) and Kalle Nio (Finland) - have worked as magic
consultants on the show.
Infused with a captivating blend of humour and philosophy, Heka draws
inspiration from 20th-century magic tricks, mind games, sleight of hand.
Embracing elements of contemporary choreography, it reimagines magic using
repetition, counterpoint and misdirection and explores the dynamics of group
magic, probing the possibilities of multiple hands and gestures and delving into
the nuances of delay and anticipation. The result is a mesmerising choreography
of juggling where everything is definitely not as it seems…
By reinterpreting magic tricks through a choreographic language, the female
jugglers of Heka emerge as the true protagonists, channelling the
Egyptian goddess and challenging the gender stereotypes that have long persisted
in the field of magic. Gandini Juggling will be running a workshop programme
alongside the Heka tour. A range of two-hour workshops, both in person
and online, aimed at professional jugglers and performers and those that are new
to the art form will be available.

'Close-Up'
by Vincent Gambini - A unique magic performance on headphones, for 1
spectator at a time. Inside a seaside café, surrounded by unsuspecting customers, you
are invited to sit at a table and watch a 15-minute performance. In
front of your very eyes, playing cards transform inexplicably and sugar
cubes vanish without a trace. But as you listen to the performer's voice
and the sounds of the café on headphones, the line between reality and
fiction becomes increasingly thin: is this a real café, or a film set
filled with actors? What is really happening now, and what is simulated
and pre-recorded?
Combining expert sleight-of-hand magic with the dreamlike nature of
cinema, Close-Up invites you to briefly reimagine everyday life as an
uncanny illusion.
This is the last performance of Gambini's Close-Up, concluding the tour
funded by Arts Council England. 26th October, at The Nose café bookshop,
28 Newgate St, Walton on the Naze, Essex CO14. Performance slots run
10.30am-4.30pm, free. Book at
www.ticketsource.co.uk. Show info:

Leveridge
Legerdemain Lecture. What do the Bristol Society of Magic, The Anglian Magic
Society and the Cotswold Magical Society all have in common? The answer is they
have all recently experienced Mark Leveridge's lecture, Leveridge Legerdemain.
Available in both in-person and Zoom formats, this professionally presented
lecture provides club members with a wide range of practical magic to learn and
then use. Mark's methods rely on subtlety rather than sleights, and he uses
props that are either every day objects or common, readily available apparatus.
With magic suitable for a close-up show, strolling, mentalism and stand up
performance, there is something that is bound to interest just about everyone,
and Mark's entertaining presentations followed by clear and thorough
explanations guarantee that everyone goes away at the end enthused and with
great new magic to try. Mark has over 40 years lecturing experience and has
presented his talks all over the world, so clubs can book knowing that they will
enjoy a well organised and entertaining evening. For more information go to
