Matthew Garrett
South Downs Magicians
June 2026
Reviewed by Paul Sturgess
Our
June meeting has already had loads of rave reviews on social media from our
members. One of our best attended lectures did not disappoint. Matthew Garrett
was fabulous from start to finish.
He set up professionally, looked the part and performed impeccably. Each
routine, and it wasn’t just a lecture about Linking Rings (Matthew is a great
exponent of Cardistry – more on that later) was performed as for a lay audience,
then broken down into every moving part, with an explanation that was clear and
thorough.
Matthew's explanations even made us feel that we could perform these effects.
The presentation was utterly professional, as was Matthew's smart appearance and
approach to his art.
The evening started with a “standard” Rings set, followed by Matthew’s change-up
that made the whole routine both totally believable and convincing that we were
watching real magic. And Close-up, Matthew showed us just how to prove the
existence of magic.
Next was a complete change, with his version of the Magic Square, but instant!
What a great idea, which he shared with us all.
Compering ideas ended the first half, with a variety of media used, including
“Misheard Lyrics” – great fun.
Whilst Matthew’s Ninja products filled much of the second half; and they proved
to be a great way to finish the evening; with a multitude of Ninja objects
linking together. He also proved it was possible for anyone to do, teaching one
of our number to link rings and finger rings and steel balls with great aplomb.
Yes, the evening was liberally scattered with various amazing “linking objects”,
but we were all left spellbound by Matthew’s Cardistry routine. The lecture
culminated with an impressive display of card manipulation to music.... an
absolute joy to watch and a brilliant finish to an informative and thoroughly
enjoyable evening.
As the evening closed to great applause, small groups of members were seen to be
trying out Matthew’s “card-flicking” techniques to various levels of expertise.
I thoroughly recommend Matthew to any Magic Club anywhere.
