Roy Charles Lecture

South Downs Magicians were recently treated to a hugely entertaining lecture under the tutelage of Roy Charles.

Roy, an Associate Member of The Magic Circle with Silver Star, clearly loves plying his trade. At the end of the evening, we all agreed that it must have been the biggest number of tricks and effects crammed into an hour and a half that we've ever witnessed. Roy presented these effects with schoolboy fun and a smile on his face that left us spellbound. It was interesting to hear how this had blossomed from the shy schoolboy holding his mum's hand, to the Butlin's redcoat and all-round entertainer on stage, screen, close-up and cruise liners.

Roy's time in Cruise Line magic had taught him to minimize the size of effects and maximize the impact, and he demonstrated this with a number of routines, such as the silk tube switch to replace the change bag.

Cane to Ribbon and back again; Oreo trick biscuits; a squeaker; sponge balls; rope magic; and thumb tips, were just some of the many tricks on show.

In reviewing the evening, which flew by, there were just too many effects for us to list in this review. I would highly recommend Roy to any Magic Club for a really fun lecture.
