This
Bank Holiday Monday, my family and I spent a fantastic afternoon at the Phoenix
Theatre in Blyth watching The Secret by Danny Hunt of Amethyst Magic. Performing
his one-man show with the support of Stephanie who co wrote the show. Danny
delivered an afternoon packed with laughter, amazement, and audience
participation from start to finish.
As we entered the theatre, there was already a real buzz of excitement among the
audience. Children and adults of all ages eagerly awaited the performance, and
the atmosphere was warm, friendly, and full of anticipation. The first half
opened with the hilarious routine with the chance to win £50 involving a lady
from the audience who genuinely seemed delighted to leave with not the £50 but a
consolation prize of an inflatable fish! This was followed by a gentleman
assisting with a rather large “Hydrostatic Glass”, which drew great reactions
from the crowd.
Danny then allegedly taught the audience how to do a trick - the classic “Silk
to Egg” trick, which was both entertaining and engaging for everyone watching.
The audience participation throughout the show was excellent, Danny’s
presentation of Maurice Fogel’s “Second Sight,” along with the Wayne Dobson
snooker balls routine, produced audible gasps from those seated around us.
Another audience volunteer took part in a brilliant card in glass routine,
followed by a very funny prediction which had the theatre laughing loudly.
After the interval came a magic trick for everyone to take part with which
involved using the secret envelopes handed out before the show began. Danny and
Steph has recently been appointed Magic Circle Ambassadors and this routine was
dedicated to The Magic Circle and all of its members.
One of the standout moments was “Puzzle,” a beautifully performed routine set to
music that was extremely well received by the audience. This was followed by the
impressive “Ring On Arm” routine before Danny finished with Peter Warlock’s
“Liquid Glass” — personally one of my favourite illusions of the entire show.
Overall, The Secret was a superb afternoon of entertainment, leaving the
audience smiling as they departed the theatre. Danny Hunt proved himself not
only to be an outstanding magician and showman, but also a true gentleman,
personally thanking visitors as they left the venue.
The show is currently touring throughout the UK, and if you see it advertised
near you, I would highly recommend taking the family along — you certainly will
not be disappointed.
