Ball Thru Glass - sneaky method to make a sponge ball penetrate the base of an ungimmicked wine glass. Cabaret Calculus - parlour/close up show prediction effect that disguises a well known principle to create a cleaner effect. Cheeky Ring Move - finger ring off cord that relies on pure cheek rather than sleight of hand. It's Not What You Think - feature close-up card routine with a strong kicker ending. Amazon Predictor - easy to do stand-up routine in which you correctly predict a book title selected at random by a spectator. All the material is based on or developed from routines contained in E-Club Pro and everything is different from previous E-Club Pro based lectures. Edinburgh International Magic Festival

17th-30th December

From the organisers: MagicFest reappears this winter with its first live programme in two years. Magic workshops, shows for kids, others for grown ups, storytelling, live music... the festival has a packed lineup of some of the best Scottish performers and magicians straight from The Magic Circle!

For the first time in its 12 year history, MagicFest presents shows for children aged 0-3 years old. Snow Tale, produced by Scottish playwright and actor Natalya McDonald. This delightful show is about love, family and home, with magic, sensory games and a ‘buzzing’ disco.

The Scottish Storytelling Centre is also home to the majority of shows, a stunning, intimate theatre in the heart of the old town. Con Artist, card sharp and star of BBC’s ‘The Real Hustle’ Paul Wilson heads the lineup alongside London based Laura London, bringing her hit West End show ‘Cheat’ to the festival. Fringe sell-out sensation, Kevin Quantum performs ‘The Trick That Fooled’, a show about magic tricks that have fooled some of the smartest and most creative people from the last 100 years. He’s joined by Fringe favourites Elliot Bibby and Magic Gareth with famous Edinburgh family performers Gary James and Tricky Ricky completing the lineup with their hilarious family shows.

The final festival performance Hogmanay House fuses magic with storytelling and live music. Charting the history and origins of Hogmanay in a delightful 75 minute performance at the exquisite Royal Scots Club in the Edinburgh New Town, on the 30th December - just before the bells! Featuring an all-star cast: Scottish Singer Songwriter Ainsley Hamill (featured in The Guardian Album of the Month 2021) alongside fellow musician/composer Ron Jappy, silver-tongued storyteller and wand-maker Jock Ferguson, sleight of hand maestro Lewis Barlow and mentalist Drew McAdam.

For Artistic Director Kevin Quantum, magic is much more than just tricks: "For me magic is about bringing joy into people’s lives, providing a moment of escapism and offering a mesmerising, impossibly brilliant alternative view of reality. Come, enjoy a show, and be that kid again!" 17th-30th December. For full details of all our events and activities see www.magicfest.co.uk.

Richard Jones: Escape - UK Tour

February Dates

From the promoters: "Richard Jones was the winner of Britain's Got Talent and is a British Army soldier as well as one of the world’s greatest magicians in The Magic Circle. The mesmerising Lance Corporal will confirm exactly what made him the stand out act to win Britain’s top talent show in 2016... And still the only magician to have won the show. After gasps of emotion shown on the ITV programme, much of the audience were reduced to tears when Richard paid tribute to his veteran mentor, Fergus Anckorn – a fellow magician who died last year before his 100th birthday. On his extended tour of Escape, Richard endeavours to break the boundaries of the mind with his ‘magic with meaning’, debuting a further twist on some of his newest, awe-inspiring magic. In heart-warming memory of Fergus, he will be recreating some of his dear friend’s most incredible tricks too - some of which the legendary soldier only ever taught Richard himself."

Champions of Magic - UK Tour

March Dates

From the promoter: Champions of Magic returns to the UK in 2022 for a short tour, before heading to Europe to perform in some countries you’ve only heard about through war journalism. So see them while you still can. They genuinely might not come back.

But let’s be honest, this isn’t ‘In & Of Itself’. You don’t get to feel clever for watching our show. And we’re not going to try and sell to MagicWeek readers using a series of adverbs and adjectives about a group of performers whom you’re either friends with on Facebook, or have at least seen drunk at the Ruskin. So what’s in it for you as a professional magician? Allow us to walk you through it...

• If you love brushed-aluminium props, black art, or the impeccable design work of Tim Clothier then do we have a show for you. We’ve got a truckload of it. Literally.

• You’ll gasp at the world’s most dangerous performance of the Jaws of Death! (The prop is the same as all the others but the tech who suspends it is entirely unqualified).
• You’ll be shocked by how much a Sven deck goes for at the merch stand.
• You’ll enjoy close-up magic performed on the big screen – join other magicians for the Elmsley count-along!
• You’ll feel like a meteorologist when you can see the Snowstorm coming about 4 minutes before it happens.
• One night the roller in the Dreamvision prop WILL fail. This could be it and you’ll want to be there when it does! Let’s find out together if we have an ‘out’ for that. (Spoiler alert: nope).
• Hang around for the Meet & Greet in the lobby after the show – the cast love unsolicited notes.

Tickets start from just £25. That’s three quid cheaper than Criss Angel’s Penguin lecture. Or use some of those sweet, sweet Zoom Show profits, and treat yourself to a front row seat at £55. That way we’ll even hear you when you tell your date ‘I know how they did that’. Here’s the tour info. Bring family, bring friends, don’t bring a deck. We promise you a fun night out:

31st March Brighton Centre
2nd April Nottingham Motorpoint Arena (on sale soon)
3rd April London Eventim Apollo
4th April Cambridge Corn Exchange
6th April Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
7th April Grimsby Auditorium (on sale soon)
9th April York Barbican
10th April Manchester Opera House

Tickets for all shows at www.championsofmagic.co.uk. Please note the show is not recommended for children under 5, or performers still doing Bandanna Banana. Special magicians only offer – book tickets with 3 or more other magicians and get the bonus of going to Nando's together after the show to discuss how you would have done it better.
