Number 1164 - Saturday 15th October 2022

The Session. Radisson Hotel & Conference Centre, Heathrow, London. January 13th - 15th 2023. From the organisers: This year: Markobi, Peter Turner, Mortenn Christiansen, Brian Watson, Arthur Benjamin, Gustav Kuhn, Matt Baker, Mark James, Luke Jermay, Darren Delaney, Alice Pailhes and Alex Romanoff. Started fifteen years ago, in Gloucestershire, by a bunch of friends simply trying to make the sort of convention they wanted to go to: a convention that wasn’t too big, that actively encouraged sessioning, and a convention where the performers actually wanted to, and did, hang with the attendees.

We sell out every single year. With previous guests like Juan Tamariz, Derren Brown, David Blaine, Luke Jermay, Christian Grace, Caroline Ravn and Roberto Giobbi it’s easy to see why. Secure your seat at the table. Book your ticket to The Session now. www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic-conventions/the-session

The Politics of the Erdnase Mystery by Gregg Webb. "I had the Expert at the Card Table memorized in 1967. Years later I noticed that people were delving into who Erdnase actually was. I followed the developments, and believed as many did, that his name spelled backwards would yield the identity. Many came up with Andrews. I left it at that for a while, until finding out about Wilbur Edgerton Sanders..." To read the full article by Gregg Webb, Click Here. 15.10.22

Arsenal International stars give the thumbs up to Marvin’s Magic. Britain's Vanhargen Twins fool Penn & Teller. Martin hart writes: The Vanhargen Twins performed a telepathic routine on the hit TV show Penn & Teller Fool Us, baffling the world’s most knowledgeable magicians, Penn & Teller. In the performance, the twins, Poppy & Sasha, took on the roles of Telepathic Athletes, (Telepathletes) competing to be the fastest senders of thought messages in the world’s first Telepathic Olympics. Competing in three telepathy events, the twins managed to communicate random information with each other without talking and with lightning speed. Penn & Teller had no explanation for what they had just witnessed.

The twins flew to Las Vegas from their hometown of Gloucester, determined to win the prestigious ‘Fool Us’ trophy and star in Penn & Teller’s Las Vegas stage show at the Rio Hotel & Casino, the star prize for fooling the famous duo. Anyone who succeeds wins the right to perform with Penn & Teller in their celebrated show at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Nearly 25 years on... I had a lovely email from Darren McDonald this week and although not intended for publication I couldn't resist. Darren wrote: "I thought I’d share this with you not because it is newsworthy but just that it is a lovely coincidence and one that you helped with. I was in a bar last night in Islington with a corporate finance company I was working with at a conference. A guy in the group pointed out Gaby Roslin was sitting behind me. She of course presented the show I was on as a youngster and thanks to your video archive I was able to search 'MagicWeek Darren' and find the video to show her and our group. She was genuinely thrilled at the coincidence and we recreated a moment 25 years on. I've attached the image for you to see. As always, thanks for your hard work keeping the magic community connected!"

In the photo Darren has recreated a childhood memory, replacing his then red fez with a red bag! The original video really is delightful, capturing the fun and excitement of a young Darren McDonald, being announced the winner: "Magicians' Nicky, Darren and Robert compete on 'Whatever You Want' - 1998" See YouTube.
