CollectingMagicBooks.com now has the new revised edition of Juan Tamariz’s classic book Sonata ready for pre-order: We are ordering these directly from the publisher to get them to the UK as quickly as possible. Copies are expected in the UK the week commencing the 12th of December and will be shipped out to customers the day they arrive. Here’s what the publishers say about this special book:

“Sonata was Tamariz’s first volume of 'Bewitched Music'. Years later, Mnemonica, the second volume of the series, shook the magic scene. By that time, Sonata had been out of print for years and used copies fetched high prices. At long last, Sonata is back, newly edited, with errors and omissions corrected and information added. This is Sonata with an enhanced score. The material, while published decades ago, is still vibrant. It has not aged. It is a selection of some of the finest magic with playing cards and penknives ever published, ready to be presented by today’s performers for the amazement of today’s audiences. This sonata is written to be played—a classic work renewed for this and future generations. Included with Sonata is a reproduction booklet of The New Mini-Symbolic Method; a system of symbols developed by Juan Tamariz to read, interpret, and write down tricks. It was originally published in conjunction with Sonata in 1989. It has been revised for the new edition."

Sonata is available to pre-order now for £85 with free UK 2nd class postage from www.collectingmagicbooks.com.

The Wessex Magical Association's 90th Anniversary Year. The Wessex Magical Association has been marking its 90th anniversary this year. As well as a convention and gala show earlier in the year, the club recently received a visit from Megan Swann, President of The Magic Circle. In a special ceremony she presented to the club a copy of a painting of Jasper Maskelyne, the club’s very first president. Jasper was known as the War Magician and is most remembered for his accounts of his work for the British military during the Second World War, in which he claimed to have created large-scale ruses, deceptions and camouflage, as part of the war effort to defeat the Nazis.

The original painting was given as a gift over 40 years ago to a longstanding member of the club, Laurie Jackson. The painting was then later given to The Magic Circle for safekeeping, lest it get lost in an attic. Megan presented the picture to Joan Wright, the association’s first lady president, who in turn had presented the original painting to the Magic Circle back in 1978. Alistair Brien, the club’s outgoing president said, "This visit marks a full (magic!) circle. It’s great to welcome back a piece of the club's heritage after so long and it was a special treat to welcome Megan to our club to be part of our special celebrations." www.wmagic.co.uk.

Surrey Stage Competition 2022. Adam Mosley writes: On Thursday, the 24th of November the Surrey Society of Magicians held their annual stage competition. There was a packed auditorium with a mixture of magicians and laypeople watching the seven acts in the theatre. A great night was had by all with a very high standard throughout. We would like to thank the audience members, John Field the compère, the two lay judges, and our magical judge Mike Sullivan for their hard task in finding the top three acts. In third place was David Andrews, second was Kelly Robinson and in first place was Jack Bedell-Pearce a great evening all round. The Bernard Weller comedy award was won by Paul Dickson.
