Ulster Society of Magicians Dinner and Lecture. James Hobart writes: Final reminder. Due to the venue restricting our numbers this year there are now only a dozen places left for the next big event in the Ulster Society of Magicians calendar for 2023 - the Ted Oldham Memorial Lecture and Chairman’s Dinner on Saturday, 1st April 2023.

It’s a perfect opportunity to meet and learn from Max Fulham - the undisputed hit of Blackpool 2023 where he compered the Sunday night Gala Show. The afternoon lecture and Q&A by Max Fulham will take place in Ballynafeigh Community Association at the bottom of the Ormeau Road, Belfast at 2.30 pm. The lecture is free of charge to members attending the dinner that evening and £10 if not attending. For non-members the fees are £15 and £20 respectively.

The arrival time for the evening has been confirmed as 7.30pm for a 7.45pm sit down on the Marble Cedar Lounge, upstairs in The Errigle Inn, also on the Ormeau Road. Due to venue licensing laws the evening event is restricted to patrons over 18 years of age. Please reserve your place by sending the names of your guest(s) to Paula McIntyre at vippykins@icloud.com or 0771 618 3298. Final Deadline for payment and booking is 15th March. For those wishing to stay overnight in Belfast we would recommend you book the Premier Inn in Alfred Street and will be arranging taxi transfers before and after the event if there is sufficient interest.

Special guest at the dinner will be President of The Magic Circle Megan Swann and she will be supporting Max Fulham on the after dinner cabaret show. Please prepare your group of friends for an evening of fine food, raffle, magic and laughter for the bargain price of just £39.50. Any questions can be addressed to the Secretary, James Hobart, whose contact details, and other information about the Society can be found on our website www.online-usm.com.

Carl De Rome. Jonathan Royle writes: On Monday morning 20th February 2023 following the Blackpool Magic Convention, Magician, Illusionist, Singer and all round entertainer Carl De Rome died peacefully after finally losing his battle with cancer. Those who knew Carl will remember him as a truly larger than life character who always had time to help anybody and everybody just so long as you did not treat him or others he knew badly. He stuck up for what he believed in and having visited him in person on Thursday 16th February I'm glad to say he kept his dark sense of humour and mental alertness to the very end.

Carl's family have announced details of his funeral which will take place on Friday 24th March 2023 from 1.15pm at Carleton Cemetery & Crematorium, Stocks Road, Blackpool FY6 7QS. All are welcome to attend as they also are at the wake afterwards, taking place at The Wainright Club, 173 Hornby Road, Blackpool FY1 4RD.
