Number 1213 - Saturday 23rd September 2023

London's 'Conjuring at the Court', back on Thursday 5th October with a top lineup! Russell Levinson writes: Young & Strange is a comedy double act who have headlined the world's largest international touring magic show, Champions of Magic, and Wonderville, at the Palace Theatre in the West End. Jon Allen is a most entertaining and inventive magician, with a dry wit and many original ideas, frequently borrowed, not to say stolen, by other magicians! Danny Buckler is ridiculously entertaining, a very funny man who compered The Magic Circle Christmas Show to great acclaim. Michael Vadini is one of our favourite magicians. With his gentle style, exceptional theatricality and sleight of hand, he creates an atmosphere of wonder that lulls you into believing that the impossible is perfectly natural.

Don't miss this chance to enjoy a night of laughter, magic and amazement, at an amazingly low price. The show starts at 8pm and runs to 10pm with an interval. Why not come early and enjoy a meal before the show! Book now at just £13 for a ticket at www.conjuringatthecourt.com or £14 on the door. 23.9.23

Jasper Blakeley's Showtime Lecture - The Surrey Society of Magicians, Thursday 28th September. Adam Mosley writes: Many will probably know Jasper Blakeley as the Russian-esque Comedy Magician Kockov, but what you might not know is that Jasper has owned The World’s Smallest Magic Theatre in his hometown of Barry in south Wales for over five years. Performing a twice-weekly comedy magic and mind-reading parlour show to an intimate public audience of just 26, Jasper not only has an amazing insight into running a unique magic venue, but he also has a full understanding of how to put together literally hours of ever-changing magic cabaret material.

In this ‘Showtime’ Lecture, Jasper will discuss the realities of owning and running a magic venue, marketing events, choosing material and constructing full 90 minute magic shows (his shows change every 9 months or so due to repeat customers wanting to book). Jasper will also talk about which commercially available effects, both cabaret and close-up, can be easily adapted to work in an intimate show environment, plus how to take what you already own and turning it into a stage piece to perform at your next wedding or event. Jasper will also be performing and explaining numerous original effects never lectured before, but each one is ‘a worker’ having featured in his previous theatre shows. 8pm on Thursday 28th September at The Surrey Society of Magicians.  Members are free and visiting magicians are welcome for a £10 entrance fee. The lecture takes place in East Horsley, Surrey. For full details please contact Adam Mosley: addmoses@hotmail.com.

Dr. Matt Pritchard's 'Designing Deceptions' lecture, South London Magic Society, 3rd October. Simon Rosselli writes: Optical illusions have both an aesthetic and scientific appeal as they question our perception of reality. This talk will deconstruct the development process of creating new illusions. Charting the journey from first inspiration, through practical hurdles, to the final design and public impact. It will also explain how optical principles, smart materials, and even typographical word play can be exploited in magic effects. The speaker, Dr Matt Pritchard, is a previous winner of the international Best Illusion of the Year Contest. Since the pandemic lockdown, his work has focused on creating novel illusion videos that have delighted/frustrated the magic community and have been described by Popular Mechanics as “charmingly analogue”. Dr Matt Pritchard is a science magician and illusion designer. In 2021 he won the international Best Illusion of the Year contest for his “Phantom Queen” entry. His lecture at Blackpool got him a standing ovation.

Tuesday 3rd October. South London Magic Society, Clock House Methodist Church Hall, Clock House Road, Beckenham, Kent BR3 4JP, just opposite the station. £10 for non-members which can go towards joining. Doors open 7pm - Lecture 8pm - 10pm. www.southlondonmagic.co.uk.
