Number 1222 - Saturday 25th November 2023

Andy Clockwise is The Magic Circle Children’s Entertainer of the Year 2023. On Sunday 19th November, The Magic Circle held its Children’s Entertainer of the Year competition in front of a sold-out theatre audience at their headquarters in London. The six finalists were Professor Strange, Tony Baloney, Magic Kurtis, Flip, Mr Belldini and Andy Clockwise. The judging was decided by combining votes from children in the audience, who put gold coins into boxes which featured a photo of their favourite performer, with marks awarded by the judges (Terry Herbert, Russ Brown and Paul Longhurst).

Many congratulations to Andy Clockwise, who was awarded first place plus £1000, Mr Belldini who was awarded 2nd and £500 and Tony Baloney 3rd, together with £250. Andy, who has been a children’s entertainer for 27 years and is a favourite with celebrities' children and performs regularly on P&O cruise ships, said "What an incredible line-up of talent and what a show. The atmosphere in the theatre from the families was incredible and I’m overjoyed to have won. I’m so pleased that The Magic Circle recognises this branch of our art as well as Close-Up Magic and Stage Magic. Children’s entertainers are so important and are quite often a child’s first experience of magic and live entertainment at birthday parties. Being presented the award from a legend in children’s entertainment, Terry Herbert MIMC, makes this win even more special."

This is only the second time that The Magic Circle has held this competition, the first being in 2019. This year's competition was organised by members of the Children’s Entertainer of the Year Competition committee: Dave Allen, Kevin Doig, Gordon Drayson and Jezzo. Plans are to run the competition every 2 years moving forward, so if you’re a member of The Magic Circle and would like to enter, keep a look out for entry details in 2025. Jack Delvin MIMC 1931 - 20th November 2023. Jack spent a lifetime in magic from his initial interest as a child to working behind the counter of Ellisdons in Holborn, to becoming the President of The Magic Circle in September 2009, following the sudden death of Ali Bongo. Enthused with a never-ending passion for magic Jack was a very popular and regular 'Monday Nighter' at The Magic Circle during which time he contributed so much to magic (one of the first sets of lecture notes I ever bought was 'Delvin's Deceptions' in the late 70s). He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Duncan Trillo. [Image: President of The Magic Circle Jack Delvin on the cover of 'The Magic Circular', January 2010]. 25.11.23
