Number 59 - 11th August 2001
Geoffrey
Durham - The Magical One Man Show takes a break for a few weeks in the
Summer, and then goes back on the road, starting at the New
Theatre Royal, Portsmouth in October. Geoffrey has built up a whole new audience for
his brand of magic following on from the success he's enjoyed from his appearances on
Channel 4's Countdown. If the show comes to a theatre near you
don't miss it - we've heard nothing but great reports from those who've
been. See What's On for dates and venues.

Halifax Magic Circle
member and hospital nurse Luke Orwin is off on a ten-day African trek to
raise money for Starlight Children's Foundation. Luke, 26, works on the
children's ward at York district hospital and will be joining a team of
walkers from all over the country for the trek across Namibia in
temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius. The trip is being organised
by the Starlight Children's Foundation, which grants wishes to children,
and supplies entertainment equipment for seriously ill children. Luke, of
Huntington Road, York, needs to raise £2,500 by November before he sets
off in February next year. He said: "I see this as a fantastic challenge
and am really looking forward to the adventure. I'm hoping to be able to
brighten up the lives of children who are seriously ill. I am working with
these children every day, so I know how important this money will be to
them." Luke is currently in training at Courtney's Gym, Monks Cross, York.
Anyone interested in sponsoring him should telephone 07811 280421 or email

The Greater London Authority is looking
for street entertainers to play a part in the new plans for Trafalgar
Square. This year a pilot scheme of daily entertainment is being launched
and the GLA is looking for skilled street performers to perform in the
Square. Initially the plan is to have street performers work for up to
three days each week, and at weekends. Real street performing is, in my
opinion, one of the best ways to master the performance of magic, and will
teach you more about how to relate/work to an audience than any other
performing medium. In the
UK Eddie Izzard, actor Neil Morrissey, TV chef Ainsley Harriott and actress Sarah Crowe all
street-performed professionally for years in London's Covent Garden in the
mid eighties, and went on to achieve great things. For further information
on street performing in Trafalgar Square e-mail
trafalgar.square@london.gov.uk Thanks to Andi Gladwin for this
news. For a live web-cam link to Trafalgar Square

Drew McAdam reviews
Marc Salem’s Mindgames in the Edinburgh News "He is a gentleman with a
self-effacing humour who utterly rejects the role of super-psychic. He is
also expert at putting people at ease and giving them good old-fashioned
