John Calvert is one of the most famous names in magic and one of the last of the great touring showmen. The star of many movies his own life story reads like a screenplay. On the afternoon of Sunday 8th February 2004, John Calvert will be presenting his hour long show at The Magic Circle Headquarters, 12 Stephenson Way, London NW1. This show runs from 2.30pm to 3.30pm (doors open at 2pm) and is open to magicians, their families and friends. It will be followed, after a short break, by a further one hour lecture and Q&A session. As the lecture is for magicians only The Magic Circle will be laying on alternative entertainment for families and friends. It promises to be a great afternoon and a real once in a lifetime opportunity to see a magic legend. The Laurence Olivier Awards, the most prestigious awards in London theatre and the highlight of the theatrical year, were established in 1976 as The Society of West End Theatre Awards; Lord Olivier agreed to have his name associated with them in 1984. Today they are presented each year by the Society of London Theatre. This year two shows that featured magic have been nominated in the 'Best Entertainment' category, Duckie’s C’EST BARBICAN! (in which Paul Kieve appeared) devised and written by Mark Whitelaw, Ursula Martinez, Christopher Green, Marisa Carnesky, Francesca Baglione and Simon Vincenzi and JUS’ LIKE THAT! written and created by John Fisher. International News: The Swedish Magic Circle in cooperation with Casino Cosmopol invite you to enter a Magic Tournament in Stockholm on March 26th and 27th, 2004. The final with eight contestants will take place at Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm on the 27th of March. The qualifying rounds and finals will start at 8pm on the 26th and 27th March in the Casino. The competitions will take place in the casino's restaurant area so there may be some distractions. The requirements: "A seven minute act of stand up character." The prizes: 1st approximately: £1,500 (20,000 SEK), 2nd: approximately £750 (10,00 SEK), 3rd: approximately £375 (5,000 SEK). The Travis Perkins Assembly 12th Ferrybridge Day of Magic takes place on Sunday, 4th July.
