Alice
still works wonders. "English National Ballet has dipped into its back
catalogue for a popular attraction with half-term family appeal — Derek
Deane’s Alice in Wonderland. This colourful production, first staged in
1995, is revived for the autumn tour for the first time in six years.
Apart from the perennial pleasure of Lewis Carroll’s fantasy, the other
enticement here is music by Tchaikovsky. Not that he wrote such a ballet,
of course, though an enthusiastic programme note suggests he should have
done..." To read the full review in The Times

The
Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero was
reviewed by Andrew Lycett in The Times last Sunday. "The American
escapologist Harry Houdini may not have spawned a premiership eponym such
as Boycott or Hoover. But, as confirmed in Cassell’s Dictionary of Slang
by Jonathon Green, “pulling” or “doing a Houdini” is acceptable
lower-division parlance for getting out of a tight fix. (According to this
invaluable reference work, the name also doubles for marijuana, as in an
aid to escaping reality.) The reason for Houdini’s linguistic longevity is
that he was a worldwide phenomenon — a brilliant magician and publicist
who focused on daring feats of escape at a time (around 1900) when the
public had dollars and half crowns to spend and were looking for thrills
during an entertainment lull between the music hall and the movies. Born
Ehrich Weisz, the son of a rabbi, in Budapest in March 1874, and brought
up, from the age of four, in Appleton, Wisconsin, Houdini fulfilled their
fantasies, as he perfected an ever more exciting range of releases from
chains, boxes, straitjackets, then a combination of the above, dangling
from a bridge or submerged in a lake, and finally the Chinese water
torture cell, where he was suspended upside down in a steel and glass
cabinet full of water... "To read the full review

Double
trouble! "The Twins, the world's only identical twin
illusionists, win freedom from BBC TV's The Slammer. The Governor
(comedian Ted Robbins) is in charge of the prison where talented
entertainers are incarcerated. Four exceptional acts perform in a 'Freedom
Show' for the chance to be released. The Twins performed an astonishing
levitation in front of an amazed and dumbfounded Parole Board of 50
children - who then decide which act gets released. Once the votes came in
it was clear that The Twins had won the prize of freedom by a huge lead.
One of the Parole Board members screamed 'they are twintastic!'" The
Slammer, Friday 22nd December, 4.55pm on BBC1.

Christmas
came early for magician Paul Craven when he found himself entertaining
his boyhood hero, musician Paul Weller and his band at two London venues
recently, the Electric Roundhouse and the Forum. "Paul Weller has always
been an iconic figure for me from the days when he was in The Jam - so it
was huge fun to give him something back more than two decades later. He is
still an incredible performer on stage. Just to put even one-tenth of the
passion into my magic as he does into his music would be a challenge.
Offstage he was great company - both interesting, and interested, in the
magic. Indeed, one evening we even adjourned to the kebab house where the
card magic continued!" That's Entertainment...
