Number 423 - 2nd August 2008
Britain
has Got Talent! 24 close-up magicians competed for the
People's Choice Award for Close-Up Magic (and a $10,000 prize) last week
at the joint IBM SAM Convention held in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Six
made it through to the judged final and then it was left down to the
audience to decide... Marc Oberon won, enjoying two standing ovations
along the way with his original magic - that in his hands is
real magic. I am sure readers will be as delighted as I was on
hearing this news. Marc is a 24/7 magic guy and his love of the art,
combined with a personal quest for excellence, has really paid off. I
first saw Marc perform this routine at the British Ring Eastbourne
Convention in
2006 and thought it the magical highlight of the convention.
Brilliant stuff - well done Marc!

Many congratulations also to Stage Competition winner, manipulator An
Ha-Lim, from South Korea. This year's British Ring Eastbourne Convention
is now just weeks away... and everyone I speak to about it is going!

A
special surprise event is being planned as part of the line up at this
year's International Magic Convention (November 28th-30th at the
Shaw Theatre, London). Two years ago the surprise event was a Question
and Answer session with Derren Brown, that included video footage from
his then unseen new series. This year you're not going to know exactly
what the surprise is until it starts on the Sunday! "There are a number
of reasons why we are keeping the exact nature of the event as a
surprise," says Noel Britten, event co-ordinator for the Convention,
"but undoubtedly one of them is that there seem very few genuine
surprises at Conventions nowadays, which seems strange when 'surprise'
is our business. Stan Allen at Magic Live did not announce what
any of the events were going to be before they happened. This produced a
certain level of anticipation and the excitement was palpable as the
event unfolded in front of you, if the performer or happening
warranted it. I think this will undoubtedly warrant it!" Guesses as to
what the event may be, can be emailed to
noelbritten@talk21.com under the heading "Surprise Event". The first
person to guess correctly will have their full registration cost
reimbursed at the Convention. Multiple entries are allowed, so let the
guessing begin! More Convention details on

Jack
Stephens is seen here performing to celebrity chef Gary Rhodes
onboard the Oriana. Jack tells us that Gary is a real magic fan, and
loved it! Van Buren & Co were performing in the ships theatre, Jack
emails: " It is so important to us magicians that our colleagues keep
magic alive. This is exactly what Van Buren & Co did in their superb
illusion show onboard the luxury liner, Oriana. In fact it was more than
just an illusion show. Of course, Andrew, a true gentleman of magic,
performed some large scale items (just like his did used to – except no
vanishing motorbike!). He also did some lovely effects such as vanishing
radio, appearing water bowls, vanish of a large flower arrangement and
then to all this he added some escapology (straightjacket and hand cuff
escapes) as well as some excellent juggling, uni-cycling and superb 8
stand plate spinning. This was a variety show with a capital V and hats
off to Andrew and his two lovely assistants for flying the flag of magic
across the seas. 2.8.08 |
