Number 427 - 30th August 2008
Derek
DelGaudio, Bob Kohler, Nicholas Einhorn, Jason England, Jon Armstrong
and Glenn Farrington
appear together on the International Close-up Show at the British Ring IBM
Eastbourne Convention next month. Bob Hayden reports: "Derek
DelGaudio (photo) is one of the breed of young and great knockout card
workers currently residing in Hollywood. A native of Colorado, Derek
began making a name for himself in the world of magic and
sleight-of-hand at the tender age of fourteen. His peers gave him the
nickname ‘Wonder Boy’. Driven by this reputation, he became an avid
student in the art of prestidigitation and entertainment. Over time,
Derek’s interest in astonishment was combined with his laid-back style
and innate ability to entertain and make people laugh. He continued his
captivating performances through college. Since that time he has earned
a reputation as a world-class entertainer. He now spends most of his
working hours on the road, dazzling and entertaining at corporate
events, private parties, trade shows, hospitality suites and theatre
engagements..." To read the latest Convention news

Another
first for the International Magic Convention in London this year is
the booking of Peter Samelson, a man who insists he doesn’t do magic,
but just helps people see it. Peter has combined his twin passions,
magic and theatre, to carve out a unique place in the world of show
business. This "soft-spoken conceptualist of sorcery" (The New York
Times) has created two solo off-Broadway shows, The Magician and
PaperWork, and has designed illusions for theatre, film and
television. Both his ground-breaking, and now hard to find, book
“Theatrical Close Up”, and his contribution to Jeff McBride’s tome
“Mystery School” showcase his abilities as part illusionist, part
philosopher, to blend simplicity and sophistication - to create moments
of wonder. The mid 1990’s saw Peter join Michael Chaut to create
Monday Night Magic, which, now, in its eleventh year, is the longest
running magic show in New York. Having performed atop the Great Wall of
China, in the jungles of Bali and the universities of Tokyo, this will
be Peter’s first UK Convention appearance and he will be lecturing and
performing in both the Stage and Close Up Gala. 28th - 30th November,
London. Registration details:

Morecambe, he's a northern crowd-pleasing wonder.” The List “He's
such a pro at the business of show that you'll be aching for much more.”

Eccentric
colonial explorer and comedy magician Phileas Flash (aka Rupert
Appleyard) has just returned from a successful summer season with
Thomson holidays and the Production suite in Fuerte Ventura and
Mallorca. Performing at three of their largest hotels (Oasis Papagaya,
Bonaire and Coma Gran) he has been receiving great praise from guests
and the company alike. His role at the hotels entailed a huge variety of
performance disciplines involving stage work, walkabout, workshops and
interactive storytelling. He also created four distinctively different
new half-hour family shows specifically for the contract. Going under
the title of 'The misadventures of Phileas Flash" the shows each had a
different theme (jungle, science, spying, magic) and were designed to
enthral both young and old. He will be performing a section from one of
these shows (entitled 'The incredible Flashdini') for members of the
Ipswich
Magical Society at their Presidents Night on Monday September 1st.
