The Amazing Chang - Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum. The Magic of Whittington-Wickes, 17th October 2009 – 10th January 2010. An exhibition featuring the notable early 20th century magician, The Amazing Chang, will open at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum on 17th October 2009. Sandra Evans, whose biography of Chang was published in 2006, meticulously pieced his history together after discovering that she is living in his former home in Leamington Spa. Samuel L. Whittington-Wickes MIMC was born in 1893 in Leamington Spa. Such was his passion to pursue a career in magic, 12-year-old Samuel ran away from home in 1905 and returned years later a successful, wealthy illusionist/magician. He performed in New York and Paris and toured the UK with his performances. The exhibition will bring together fascinating original props used in Chang’s acts, as well as stunning stage backdrops and advertising material that reflect an era when going to the theatre was a very common and popular form of entertainment. One of the activities was to bring The Magic Carpet Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Castle Magic to The Met theatre in Bury. In the audience on this occasion was 11 year old Annabella Horridge (daughter of past president Barrie) who wrote a report for the magazine. PRO Geoffrey Newton considers her to be the youngest writer since the Magi was formed in 1909. A copy was sent to Jon Marshall (Magic Carpet Theatre) who was very impressed and sent a letter of thanks and some magic goodies.
