The
Amazing Chang - Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum. The Magic of
Whittington-Wickes, 17th October 2009 – 10th January 2010. An exhibition
featuring the notable early 20th century magician, The Amazing Chang,
will open at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum on 17th October 2009.
Sandra Evans, whose biography of Chang was published in 2006,
meticulously pieced his history together after discovering that she is
living in his former home in Leamington Spa. Samuel L.
Whittington-Wickes MIMC was born in 1893 in Leamington Spa. Such was his
passion to pursue a career in magic, 12-year-old Samuel ran away from
home in 1905 and returned years later a successful, wealthy
illusionist/magician. He performed in New York and Paris and toured the
UK with his performances. The exhibition will bring together fascinating
original props used in Chang’s acts, as well as stunning stage backdrops
and advertising material that reflect an era when going to the theatre
was a very common and popular form of entertainment. For more

Bella's
the youngest in 100 years! The Order of The Magi (Manchester)
recently celebrated their centenary. One of the activities was to bring
The Magic Carpet Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Castle Magic
to The Met theatre in Bury. In the audience on this occasion was 11 year
old Annabella Horridge (daughter of past president Barrie) who wrote a
report for the magazine. PRO Geoffrey Newton considers her to be the
youngest writer since the Magi was formed in 1909. A copy was sent to
Jon Marshall (Magic Carpet Theatre) who was very impressed and sent a
letter of thanks and some magic goodies. The Order of The Magi now has a
new president, Ian Ball MMC, who leads the society in the first year of
their second century. The new syllabus is on their website:

Most entertaining non-card trick
competition! "For some years the Medway Magical Society has held a
'Most Entertaining Card Trick' competition, to counter the myth that
card magic couldn't be entertaining. This has always proven to be a
really fun event for competitors, members and guests. In 2009 we have
decided to take this a stage further by holding a competition where
cards couldn't be used. Each magician can only do one trick (albeit with
more than one ending along the way!) Please join us for fun evening.
Free admission, but we may get you to buy a raffle ticket." Tuesday 5th
May at The Gordon House Hotel, Rochester, Kent ME1 1LX (Map).
