Derren Brown Investigates. Show 1 The Ghost Hunter 10pm on Monday 10th May on Channel 4. Derren Brown hits the road in this brand new three-part series to find out if some of the more extraordinary claims from around the world are actually true. He starts by investigating the world of Lou Gentile, a top American ghost hunter who, for the last 20 years, has been helping rid the haunted and possessed of America of their unwanted ghostly companions. Lou genuinely believes he can photograph and take recorded messages from ghosts and suggests in some cases that the power of ghosts can even kill you. Derren has never claimed to possess paranormal powers, but uses magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship in his work. However, Lou publically claims that he has evidence to support the existence of the paranormal. Derren Brown takes a surprising, truly bizarre and disturbing journey to find out if things really do go bump in the night. Produced and Directed by Heenan Bhatti; Executive Producers Anthony Owen and Derren Brown; Produced by Objective Productions. Trailer: Click Here. Teller to lecture at The Innovention, Las Vegas. Paul Stone emails: I'm proud and excited to announce that Teller has agreed to present his brilliant and rarely seen lecture 'The Red Ball' at The Innovention at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas from 4th-7th October. Anyone who has seen Penn & Teller's wonderful show at the Rio Hotel & Casino will know that it is without doubt the strongest and most original magic show in Las Vegas. The way that Penn & Teller constantly introduce stunning new items into their show is incredible.

Teller presents 'The Red Ball' in the show and it is a real masterpiece of magic. But in Teller's opinion the lecture is even better! It documents not just the devilishly clever method but the painstaking research and development over many years that culminated in this miracle! It truly is a rare opportunity to witness a magical 'gem' and is alone worth the price of admission. More proof, if proof were needed, that The Innovention will be very different from any other Magic Convention.

The line-up of talent is extraordinary, and includes The Great Tomsoni & Co, Kevin James, Gaetan Bloom, Joseph Gabriel, Jeff Hobson (as you've never seen him before!), Lennart Green, Joanie Spina, Shep Hyken, Seth Kramer, Magic Al and, from the UK, Richard McDougall and making their US debuts, Mel Mellers and Graham P. Jolley. Space is limited, and is filling up fast. For full details and to register visit www.innovention2010.com.

Letters to Friends is the latest PDF ebook from Britain's John Carey. From the foreword by Jack Carpenter: "In these pages, you will find many mind-bending effects that you'll be able to perform 'on command' with any dog-eared pack put in your hands. You won't find any bad angles, stupid moves done at a stupid time, and usually your spectator is dead in the water long before the effect is finished, he just doesn't know it yet. I recommend that you pick say, 5 or 6 items that you like among this collection, and commit them to memory. You're going to find that in real world performing you are going to fall back on these items more times than you perform your current 'favorites.' That's just the way it is, you'll see!" The ebook costs US $15 dollars via paypal to johncareymagic@googlemail.com (or email John for more info). 1.5.10

“Oh Eck Doris!” as Les Battersby may have said. Malcolm Hebden – right (Corrie’s Norris Cole) appears somewhat bewildered when Order of The Magi (Manchester) member Peter Moran presented a version of the Twentieth Century Silks. What then was this all about? It all started when the soap’s Sunita (Shobna Gulati) became aware that 5 year old Madison Allan from Lower Darwin was suffering from neuro-blastoma (a rare childhood cancer that affects the nerve cells) and wanted to raise money for her to go to Euro Disney in Paris after the completion of radiotherapy treatment. In true showbusiness tradition colleagues rallied round to present a show at the Thwaites Empire Theatre in Blackburn. Peter was happy to oblige as he has a long association with Granada Television and particularly Coronation Street where he has worked on the production side for many years. Several stars of the show attended this variety extravaganza. The comedy came from Jimmy Cricket and the role of compère in the safe hands of Ted Robbins. Music and dance also featured not forgetting the vocal talents of Kym Marsh (Michelle Connor in the programme). Over £4,000 was raised for this very worthwhile cause. Reported by Geoffrey Newton PRO. Kent Close Up Magician of the Year. On Tuesday 20th April magicians from all over Kent met to compete in the first ever 'Kent Close Up Magician of the Year' competition. The event, organised by the Medway Magical Society, attracted the best magicians from across the county and proved to be a very interesting night. First place was awarded to Terry Herbert a leading member of The Magic Circle; second place to full time professional magician Sam Beedle from Rochester; and third to 11 year old Lewis Fuller of Biddenden, near Ashford. The judges praised Lewis for the confident way he handled his audience and his entertaining and strong magical performance. Despite being so young Lewis was competing on a level basis with experienced professional magicians. Paul Denbow, the newly elected President of the Medway Magical Society praised all the contestants. "This is the first time we have held this competition and it was a great success. Our audience have commented on how much they have enjoyed the great variety of magic they have seen. And our 3 judges, which included two non-magicians have told me how impressed they were with the high standard of magic from the contestants. We are already looking forward to this competition being a regular fixture in our calendar. I would also like to thank Alakazam Magic of Ashford for providing prizes for our contestants."
