Number 532 - 4th September 2010
Lance
Burton Master Magician. Lance Burton's incredible 14-year run at the Monte
Carlo Hotel & Resort, Las Vegas, comes to an end today, Saturday 4th September.
I remember reading about the original $100 million contract in
Magic magazine as if
was yesterday, thinking to myself "now that's what I call a contract" - and it
certainly was! The show itself was a real magic show, everything a magic
show should be, done to perfection. Although outwardly wrapped in magic
tradition, it in fact employed cutting-edge magic technology throughout, and
Lance Burton had the charm, skill and dedication to make it all happen. So,
perhaps today it is our turn to tip our hats to Lance Burton, and say a huge
'thank you' for staging one of the finest magic shows the world has ever seen,
and to wish him the very best with whatever he decides to do in the future. DT.

Debbie
McGee, Celebrity Come Dine with Me. "In this all-new celebrity
special, four famous faces compete to prove their worth as the best
dinner party host. Taking part are the country's most famous magician's
assistant 'the lovely' Debbie McGee; former MP, and aspiring stand-up
comic, Lembit Opik; radio presenter and former 11 O'Clock Show and RI:SE
host Iain Lee; and Essex glamour model and party girl Jodie Marsh.
Debbie kicks off the week in style in the luxurious Thames-side home she
shares with husband Paul Daniels. Without Paul around to wave his magic
wand, she's flying solo and has decided to cut a few corners, using some
shop bought items - something that fails to impress one eagle-eyed
guest." 8pm on Tuesday 14th September on Channel 4, see
TV Magic.

learning to hypnotise and doing some funny routines. It's about show structure,
audience management, promotion and marketing skills, and of course hypnotising
safely and with panache! In November in Blackpool there is a rare opportunity to
join Ken Webster, who has the world's longest running single venue Stage
Hypnosis show at the Horseshoe Cabaret, now combining Mentalism, and Jonathan
Chase author of one of the most popular and respected books on stage hypnosis
'Deeper and Deeper'. Ken is breaking into a mini theatre tour and Jon is

Close
Up Magic For Children - the brand new double DVD from Practical Magic will
be released on Tuesday at the
Kidology Convention.
Children's magicians normally shy away from close-up magic for a variety of
reasons. These two DVDs aim to show how you can vastly increase your income by
adding close-up magic to the list of services you offer your clients. Weddings,
close -up shows, festivals, restaurants and more - there are dozens of different
ways close-up magic can be used to increase your business. Starring Ethan Leeds,
Russell Leeds and Jeremy Le Poidevin with a Guest Appearance by Craig Petty.
Although close-up magic is normally considered difficult, on thses DVDs Russell
and Ethan show you how you can perform close-up without needing lots of
technical skill. Twelve routines are included and many of these would work as
well in a full show as they would close-up, making the content of this DVD even
more valuable. Russell and Ethan also take part in a 20 minute discussion
covering how to obtain close-up work as a children's magician, and how close-up
magic can change your business model. Finally, special guest Craig Petty tips
three of his most closely guarded creations designed specifically for children.
Craig is one of three headline lecturers at Kidology on Tuesday 7th September
(that's this Tuesday!) in Wolverhampton, along with Gary Dunn and Alan Shaxon.
Some tickets still available. Visit Practical Magic's website:
www.practical-magic.com for more
details of Kidology and this exciting new DVD release.

Twilite
Floating Bulb. "The floating light bulb is a classic grand stage illusion
that has mesmerized audiences for years. Vitelli's Twilite Floating Bulb is a
dynamic miniature version that fits right in the palm of your hand. What’s more,
it all happens inches from your audience's faces. Introduce a tiny light bulb -
it's about the same size as peanut. Make some magical passes over the bulb and
it mysteriously blinks to life - this psychic lighting is doubly impressive
because of the sheer intensity of the light. It's hard to believe so much light
can come from such a tiny bulb.... you cause Twilite to rise off your hand and
take flight!" The Twilite Floating Bulb can be performed anywhere. Visit

Merlins
of Wakefield have another UK Exclusive from Mentalist Paul Carnazzo.
The Test Book - Book Test is not the traditional 'book test' where a
spectator thinks of a word, and the mentalist reveals the word. As the title
implies, this is more of a "Book of Tests". "Using this book you will be able to
reveal thought-of words, numbers, symbols, etc. The Test Book-Book Test is an
authentic looking telepathy testing manual from the National Institute of
Parapsychology. It has a total of 11 tests that can be used as a demonstration
of telepathy or as a test of the spectator’s abilities... and of course, the
mentalist (or the spectator) is always successful." Merlins will also be at
Kidology on Tuesday 7th September.

later as a stunt double in a casino scene. It seems all those nights in the
cruise ship casinos doing tricks with the chips have finally paid off! Mel looks
forward to meeting friends and customers at the upcoming Kidology and IBM

professionals, who are happy to give their time to help raise funds for a wide
variety of charities throughout the year. In return you’ll gain experience and
guidance if you need it, be able to showcase your performances and get that warm
fuzzy feeling that you are actually making a positive difference to charities by
doing something you enjoy doing….magic. I’m still working on the CCM website but

proposal. A night of magic and fun was greatly enjoyed by all at Britannia
Royal Naval College when eight magicians entertained the Royal Navy's officers
and guests at their summer ball. Local magicians have been entertaining at the
college since 1990, often performing at the college up to three times a year. To
top off an excellent night of magic one of the officers proposed to his now
fiancée, and Zac Stone magically produced the engagement ring from and orange

Cumbria has a new magic club! The Cumbrian
Magic Circle already has fifteen members and membership is open to anyone over
sixteen with a genuine interest in magic or the allied arts. The circle meets
between September and July, on the third Tuesday of the month in Houghton
Village Hall. The venue is easily accessible from Carlisle and from junction 44
of the M6. Doors open at 7.30pm and the meeting start at 8pm. Visiting magicians
are always welcome. This will be the second time a magic club has been started
in Carlisle. The first, founded by Northern Magic Circle member Alan Driffield,
ran for about ten years from 1959, since then the nearest club to Carlisle has
been over sixty miles away in Newcastle or Barrow in Furness. The new club
brings together a good mix of ages and skills. Members range from 16 to over 70
years of age and include children's entertainers, close-up workers, cardicians,
a juggler and some people new to magic. Most of all, everyone shares an
enthusiasm for magic and for getting together to share knowledge and to learn
new skills. For more information or to enquire about membership contact Stuart
