Rameses
- The Forgotten Star Chris Woodward. Rameses the Egyptian Wonderworker was
an illusionist of the Edwardian era. Born Albert Marchinski in Poland in 1876,
he grew up in London in a distinctly middle class home. But as Rameses, he
achieved financial and artistic successes beyond the dreams of most
entertainers. His fast moving, exciting and colorful illusions took him to the
stage of London's prestigious Palladium eight times. In addition, he played
England's top theaters and made triumphant tours of America South Africa and
Europe. The highlight of his career was perhaps an appearance on the very first
Royal Variety Performance attended by The King & Queen of England. Yet despite
his theatrical triumphs, it was the stage that proved Rameses undoing.
Little has been written about Rameses' life and magic despite his singular
approach to illusions and a career most magicians would envy. Thanks to Chris
Woodward's diligent research, his story can now be told. Rameses the Forgotten
Star tells a rags to riches story that ends back in rags that was heretofore
unknown. Along the way, readers learn the secrets behind Rameses' illusions
(including his spectacular levitation), thrill at his theatrical conquests, and
see how quickly that success slipped away.
Award-winning author Chris Woodward is a member of the Grand Order of Water
Rats, and a Gold Star Member of The Inner Magic Circle. This 132 page deluxe
clothbound edition, illustrated with rare photographs and memorabilia, colour
plates, and a satin bookmark ribbon is now available, at a special introductory
price of £30.00 (including delivery), signed by the author, email c.woodward@tesco.net for
details. In the States it can be ordered from your favourite magic dealer, or
directly from the publisher:
www.squashpublishing.com. MagicWeek will be reviewing it next week (we've had
a sneak peek and it really is a beautiful book, produced to the highest
standards, crammed full of tales of wonder. It makes you want to travel back in
time and be there, if just for one day).

Dates
for MagicFest 2012 Announced! The Edinburgh International Magic Festival
will once again take place during the first week of the school summer holidays.
Running from 29th June - 6th July, MagicFest 2012 will bring more amazing magic
acts from all over the world to Edinburgh. The 2011 festival enjoyed another
year of growth, doubling its audience to bring live magic to more than 5,000
people in the city. One of the festival’s major success stories this year was
Magic School which enjoyed twice as many attendees year on year, attracting
nearly 200 budding wizards aged 7-12. This year saw the introduction of the
inaugural “Great Lafayette Award”, a worldwide award in honour of the Great
Lafayette who created the greatest live magic shows of his time. The first
recipient of this annual award was Paul Daniels, a legend of British magic, who
said: “I’m honoured to win the first ever Lafayette award. This is a great thing
that you [MagicFest] are doing here and I must say the Gala show was one of the
best magic shows I have ever been to!” MagicFest’s sleight of hand competition
“War of the Wizards” attracted competitors from all over the UK and was hotly
contested. The under 18 winner Chris Dougall, from Lanarkshire, will be mentored
by Kevin McMahon and the over 18 winner Alan Rorrison, from Port Glasgow, will
have the opportunity to present a show at next year’s MagicFest. MagicFest
Artistic Director Kevin McMahon said: “There seems to be a renaissance happening
within magic at the moment, similar to the emergence of the Impressionist
movement in the 19th century. As painters and artists had to reinvent their work
to deal with the modern innovation of photography, so magicians have had to
reinvigorate their work with the advent of CGI in movies showing people the
impossible. This has inspired a new generation of performer trying to put more
emotion into their work and find the magic within the magic. We have so many
ideas for growing and developing the Festival into a world renowned event and
look forward to showing magic lovers and new audiences how powerful live magic
can be.” Watch highlights from this year's event:

Dave
Andrews wins ' Magic to Music' Competition. Roy Marsh reports: "On Wednesday
20th July Dave Andrews (photo) won the Bexley Magic Society Magic to Music
Competition. This was his second success but this time he won it outright. Last
time he was joint winner with club President Roy Marsh. He triumphed against
some stiff opposition from fellow club members, Ken Francis, Ian Thom, Angeline
Mystique, Joe Greenaway and club chairman Kevin Doig. The competition,
instigated by former club president Jack Delvin, is based on entrants selecting
a CD with a track on it but not knowing what the piece of music is until they
get it home. They then try to put together an act suitable for the track. The
judging, in front of a lay audience, is carried out by the club members. Well
done Dave and thanks to the other contestants for a fun evening."
