Number 587 - 24th September 2011
'The Young Magician of the Year Revisited' Reported by Darren
Tossell, The Magic Circle. Fifty years ago, The
Magic Circle held its first ever ‘Young Magician of the Year’
competition. The winner was Johnny Hart (photo), whose dazzling card
manipulation routine won over the judges and set Johnny on course for an
international career taking him from London to Las Vegas, via New York,
Shanghai and every major city in the world. Jack Delvin MIMC, President
of The Magic Circle said “On behalf of the Council and Members of The
Magic Circle, I am delighted to bestow Johnny Hart with Honorary
Professional Membership of The Inner Magic Circle. His style and talent
inspired a generation of performers and he joins a short but impressive
list of the world’s very best magicians”
Russ Stevens MIMC who won the title of ‘Young Magician of the Year’ at
The Magic Circle in 1977, presented Johnny Hart with his certificate and
Membership in Blackpool last week. Russ had the opportunity for a rare
interview with Johnny that was played to an appreciative audience at
‘The Magic Circle Young Magician of the Year Revisited’ Day which took
place at the Club’s headquarters last weekend. Russ said “People say,
never meet your idols, you’ll be disappointed. However, Johnny was my
inspiration and driving force for getting me into magic and finally
getting to meet him and present him with the honour of Membership of the
Inner Magic Circle was far from disappointing. Like all of us, he may
have aged just a little, but his digital dexterity is as eye-popping
today as it was half a century ago.”
Noel Britten MIMC, organiser of The Young Magician of the Year
Revisited said “Seeing Johnny suitably feted for his outstanding
achievements was an inspiring reason for organising the event and it’s
wonderful to see him honoured in this very special year” Johnny Hart
joins just three other British magicians who hold the title of Honorary
Professional Membership of The Inner Magic Circle (David Berglas, Paul
Daniels and Wayne Dobson) and eleven worldwide including David
Copperfield, John Calvert, Silvan and Lance Burton.
The Young Magician of The Year Revisited featured a line-up of
past winners and contenders for a day of magic and workshops at The
Magic Circle. Angelo Carbone, Michael Colley, Richard Wiseman, Russ
Stevens, Scott Penrose, Graham Jolley, Richard Griffin, Nic Einhorn and
Richard Cadell were among the fifty Members who spent months putting
together one of the highlights in this year’s Magic Circle calendar.

Derren
Brown returns to Channel 4 this autumn in The Experiments, a
brand new four-part series. Shrouded in the usual secrecy, each of the
stand-alone episodes takes the form of a giant social experiment, some
of which have been inspired by classic psychology tests; others
concocted by Derren himself to illustrate how easily our behaviour can
be manipulated. Derren will attempt to explore the darker side of what
makes us tick as human beings and in one show, teach us how to
completely change our fortunes. Featuring Derren Brown's unique
combination of ingenious and mind-blowing psychology, magic, illusion,
suggestion, stunts and thought-provoking entertainment, The
Experiments sees Derren pushing the boundaries in terms of size and
scale in order to take a deeper look at human behaviour and reaction.

Palladium Magic - A Night of 100 Magicians.
Not a review, but just a quick "wow" and "thank you" to Paul Stone for
staging another superb show at the London Palladium last Sunday to
celebrate 100
years of magic at this beautiful theatre, whilst raising funds for the
MagiCares charity. It was a wonderful evening, full of surprises,
featuring some of the world's finest magicians and acts, but it was
Marko Karvo's stunning performance, direct from the Lido de Paris, that
sent audible roars of astonishment across the theatre on the night,
resulting in a spontaneous standing ovation. Wow, what an act! DT.

Puppet Magic – Ian Adair. A few weeks ago, Practical Magic released
'The Magic of Puppets', a double DVD set with Colin Dymond. Ian Adair
has now published what might be regarded as a companion book, called
‘Hand Puppet Magic’. 166 well-illustrated pages long, Ian goes into
great detail about the subject. Chapters include: Reviewing the
situation (background); Picking your puppets; The name’s the game; Bits
of business; Set-ups (staging); Using standard tricks; Clever bits;
Complete routines. As you’d expect with someone who has used puppets in
his show for well over 50 years, there’s a wealth of really practical
experience included here. The book is available from Practical Magic (as
are all Ian’s most recent publications Cedric’s Tried and Tested
Routines, Terrific-trix, More Terrific-trix and
Dealing with Magic -the story of Supreme Magic Company). Visit
