Number 663 - 9th March 2013
Congratulations
to Tim Shoesmith - The Magic Circle Close-up Magician of The Year 2013! Last
Monday, in a
keenly fought competition, eight finalists competed in front of an audience
primarily consisting of members
of the public in the Magic Circle's Devant Room, as the event was simultaneously broadcast
to a
packed audience of magicians on the big screen in The Magic Circle's theatre.
From The Magic Circle: "In third place was Will Gray whose entertaining
routine included a Goldfish production and an impossible 'signed card in sealed
deck'. Second place went to the very personable Billy Reid (left) who registered
strongly with his sponge ball routine. The winner, Tim
Shoesmith, won the top prize with a set that finished with a torn and restored
card effect on a Shakespearian theme, as Tim recalled his childhood memories of
playing Puck in his school's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Variety At The Magic Circle.
Magic Circle President, Jack Delvin, writes: "As I expect most of you know the twenties, thirties, forties and fifties were a
golden age for magicians. There were some 800 variety theatres in the UK where
you could see a fantastic show on six days of the week, with extra matinee
performances on a Saturday – and magic was included in practically all of them.
Sometimes they would do the whole show like Dante. Others did the last act, like
Robert Harbin. Others did a 12 minute spot like Jack Le Dair.
The Magic Circle is putting on a trial show of variety in the hope that it will
help to spark off another golden age of magic.
The star of this show is the World’s Maddest Mystifier, Max Somerset supported
by that great ventriloquist Kimmo with his crazy friend Charlie, Rodrigues a
most unusual juggler who, once seen is never forgotten, the amusing vocalist
Tony Arnold, and that fine and dandy couple Brian & Paula.
All this will take place at The Magic Circle Theatre, 12 Stephenson Way, London
NW1 2HD (Map).
Saturday 16th March at 7.30pm.
Seats: £25. Members & Friends: £20.
Variety is the spice of life – we would like your help in bringing it back."

Magicseen: "Magicseen Issue 49 for March 2013 is out and just bursting with
March Magical Madness (or at least, as it says on the cover, it has several
'mildly interesting things'!). The human whirlwind that is film actor, mentalist
and magical advisor Andy Nyman is our cover star - does the guy never sleep?
Find out by reading the big article on him in this issue. Also get the lowdown
on Steve Gore, Paul Daniels, Sylvester The Jester and Charlie Frye too while
you're at it. Hypnotism - entertainment or medical science? We get experts in
the two fields to talk about how they use the art for their separate purposes.
We also delve deep into the world of Magic Collectors and discover it's more
than just an obsession to hoard stuff! All this plus an interview with Mark
Bennett who has opened a new magic performance venue in Bristol called Smoke And
Mirrors, the Masterclass with two close up items for you to practise, the
results of the Magicseen Awards for 2013 (just who did our readers vote for?)
and more. We're so excited about it all that we can't wait to send you your

Keyed
In: "New from Mark Leveridge Magic is a walkabout close up effect called
Keyed In. A big seller at Blackpool, this unusual trick is ideal for anyone who
works in mix and mingle situations. The plot centres on front door keys and how
perhaps in the future they will be supplied as key 'cards' instead of physical
keys. Four blank cards print themselves one at a time with colourful keys, and
then one of the printed keys suddenly vanishes from the card and drops as a real
key into the spectator's hand. No re-set, this comes with all cards, key, plus
printed and DVD instructions. Watch the online dem or purchase now from
