Number 682 - 20th July 2013
The
International Magic Convention and Festival is delighted to announce that
Charlie Frye and Company have been booked for both events in November this year.
From the organisers: Without a doubt Charlie is the modern all around
Vaudevillian with amazing talents in both juggling and magic alongside many of
the old time allied arts. His enormous knowledge will be utilised during three
different presentations and lectures and his stunning internationally acclaimed
act, a virtuoso performance of whirlwind magic and unbelievable juggling stunts,
will feature in the Gala Show (repeated on the Saturday and Sunday nights). Just
a small amount of his extraordinary talents can be seen in this spoof 'the
making of' video 'Chip Master Charlie' a behind the scenes look at an ad he was
involved in last year:
Charlie's performance and presentations will form just a small part of the
talent on show during the week. If you book for all the events (and last year
many did) you'll be signing up for over 30 lectures and presentations, 7
different evening performances, the stunning Stage and Close Up Gala Shows, 5
Question and Answer panels, An Evening of Bar Magic, the 30th Annual
International Close Up Magic Competition, and of course the Presentation of The
David Berglas International Magic Award to a surprise, and very special
recipient. Signing up for all events would work out at the unbelievably good
value of under £5 per hour to soak up knowledge and information from a total of
38 performers from around the world, each an expert in their respective field,
to create a week of magic hedonism that for many is the magical highlight of the
year. If you cannot make the whole week no need to be disappointed though as
tickets are available for each separate day and evening event during the
Festival, and there are one, two or full three-day Convention registrations
available too, giving you an unrivalled chance to pick and choose exactly what
you can attend. Tickets available from

Jasper
Blakeley (aka Kockov) at Smoke & Mirrors, Bristol. Reviewed by Heather
Pickstock this week... "Kockov - a Monrokvian master mind reader and magician - had the crowd in the
palm of his hands when he took to the stage of the
Smoke and Mirrors boutique
magic theatre pub. Dressed in eye-wateringly tight leather trousers, with a
mullet that many 80's pop stars would be proud of, Kockov - aka Jasper Blakeley
- performed a non-stop repertoire of mind bending tricks. But his magic routines
are just part of the show as unlike some other magicians, Kockov makes his magic
and illusions side splittingly funny. He had the audience in stitches with
his off the cuff remarks and outrageous humour..." To read the full review,

The Secret Life of Uri Geller,
tomorrow, Sunday 21st July, at
9pm on BBC 2. "Uri Geller, the controversial mentalist,
paranormal expert and spoon bender, has had a life in front of the
cameras, a life surrounded by controversy, a life dotted with amazing
psychic demonstrations. But most people do not know that, away from the
bent cutlery and broken watches, he has been leading a second, covert,
life as a 'psychic spy', working secretly and without recognition for
nearly 30 years. This secret life has included work for military and
intelligence agencies on three continents; indeed, the scientists who
first did rigorous research on Geller more than 40 years ago (and
concluded that he has a phenomenal gift) were funded by the CIA. In this
documentary, the intriguing story is explored, with compelling
interviews from Uri himself as well as those who knew and worked closely
with him." See TV

Insurance for Stage Hypnotists. Gordon Wardle writes: "'Bought by Many'
is a company offering to negotiate cheaper insurance deals with large insurance
companies for several niche markets. They do this through bulk buying. They have
just set up a new group for stage hypnotists. If enough stage hypnotists express
an interest in having cheaper public liability insurance then they will
negotiate some discounted deals with the big insurance providers. They clearly
recognise the unique problems faced by hypnotists in getting suitable insurance.
