More names announced for London's International Festival of Magic in November. Joseph Barry (photo), whose recent "Inscrutable" DVD releases marked the debut of one of magic's newest rising stars, will be lecturing on both the Monday (Mentalism Day) and Tuesday (Card Magic Day). If you haven't seen Joseph's material prepare to be well and truly fooled by direct hard hitting effects. From America, Master Payne, will be presenting a 'daily dose of Payne' during the Festival. Those who have read his regular columns in Magic magazine will know the level of thought Master Payne approaches every subject with. However, until you have seen his audio visual presentations that accompany his live talks, nothing will prepare you for the sublime mixture of humour, slides and downright good advice that each presentation encompasses. Known as the Prince of PowerPoint in the world of magic he was the only presenter to be asked to give two different presentations at the last Magic Live Convention in Las Vegas and is always one of the keynote speakers at the Magic and Meaning Conferences. On the Thursday (Stage and Screen Magic) it will be an education for anyone who has ever thought of giving a PowerPoint type talk, with both Payne and Richard Wiseman, another PowerPoint wizard, both giving talks. Full festival details, with more guest names being added all the time, can be found at www.internationalmagic.com. 20.9.14

The Chestnut Man is the title of magician Richard Smith's new book (which features a magician in the story). "Emily regularly stared out of her bedroom window at the chestnut man across the street. She was fascinated by the way he let down-and-out people put their potatoes on his fire to cook, even though they had no money to buy his chestnuts. They would laugh and talk all night, sitting around his fire keeping warm. She didn’t know where they went at night as when she got up to go to school in the morning they had gone; all except the chestnut man, he was always there. One day, Emily, through curiosity more than anything else, walked over to the other side of the street to ask him a question. Little did she know it was to be a meeting that would change her life in more ways than she could ever have imagined." The Chestnut Man is available via www.readerscorner.co. 20.9.14
