The
Magicians' Podcast this week features Derren Brown. Host Richard
Young writes: One of the world's greatest living magicians takes to my hot seat
for the series finale. Derren Brown has changed mentalism in our industry
forever and become a household name in the process. He has produced more
television content over the last 15 years than any other British magician and
also produced seven full evening stage shows full of original presentations,
methods and thinking. An unexpected part of Derren's incredible success has been
the spawning of an entire generation of magicians who rip-off his psychological
presentations and material. What does the man himself really think of the Derren
clones? His answer may surprise you. Listen to this Podcast
and catch up with previous ones at
magicianspodcast.podbean.com.
It's been another excellent series of The
Magicians' Podcast. I thought the least I could do was to give something
back, so this one's for you Richard,

Entrepreneur
celebrates nine magical years in Bristol. Mark Bennett, magician and owner
of Illusions Magic Bar on the city’s popular Clifton Triangle, first moved to
Bristol nine years ago and has seen his business go from strength to strength
since. Mark started learning magic in 1992 whilst still in his nine-to-five job.
After being made redundant he decided to approach a nightclub to perform,
despite only knowing five tricks at the time. Luckily for Mark they said yes and
he started the day he lost his full-time job. He’s not looked back since.
Mark spent several years travelling around the country performing magic, before
deciding to settle in Bristol and open Illusions in 2007. His aim was to bring
magic to the public in a unique setting. World famous magicians such as the late
Paul Daniels have performed at the venue since it first opened its doors.
Following the success of the magic bar, which offers revellers the chance to
enjoy free entertainment from magicians and live music acts every week, Mark
opened sister venue Smoke & Mirrors in 2012. The magic theatre pub is home to
The House Magicians comedy magic show, which entertains audiences for two hours
every Friday and Saturday night and has received many five star reviews on Trip
Advisor.
Speaking of his nine years in business, Mark said: “Since I first started
learning magic tricks, owning magic bars was something that I had always wanted
to do as travelling around the country is quite tiring and I thought it would be
great to eventually have my own venue instead! Despite having some tough times
over the years, I have kept fighting and hopefully the magic bars will keep
growing. I’m delighted that both venues regularly receive great reviews, as the
team work really hard to ensure that all of our guests have a truly magical
experience. I’m really looking forward to celebrating Illusions tenth birthday
in 2017 and I’m excited to see what the future holds for both venues.” : See

Ben
Earl Liverpool Workshop & Lecture,
18th & 19th September, Liverpool.
Alan Singleton writes: Ben Earl Liverpool Workshop, 18th September,
Liverpool. A rare opportunity
has come up and it is on a first-come, first-served basis; be quick as
there are only 25 places available! I have managed to book Ben Earl for
a workshop here in Liverpool! Many of you will know Ben from his
appearance on Penn and Teller's Fool Us (which he did) and somehow I've
managed to persuade him to hold a 7 hour workshop up here! I met Ben
many years before P&T... I managed to get him to do a lecture for the
Liverpool Magic Circle. I must confess at that time, I had never heard
of Ben, just whispers of this 'underground magician' whose thinking and
card skills were second to none. I have to say, the skill and thinking
demonstrated by Ben was simply incredible! Over the years I have seen
many of the top magicians, and I have never witnessed card skills which
come close to his. I seriously urge you to get involved with anything
Ben does, and this is a particularly rare opportunity (plus I've heard
whispers that his new workshop is something amazing... the word
'revolutionary' has been mentioned several times!). I am not going to
expand here on what's on offer at the workshop, here is a link, which
will explain in detail what the workshop is all about:

Ben Earl lecture, Monday 19th September at 7.30pm. £5 for members and
members of the Mersey Dee Circles, £10 for visiting magicians. Venue:
