Number 1259 - Saturday 10th August 2024

Lost in The Shuffle UK film premiere at The Magic Circle, London, Tuesday 27th August. For almost as long as there have been cards, there have been card tricks. In the hands of a magician, a simple deck of cards takes on a life of its own and is elevated to an instrument of wonder and awe. Seen through the eyes of some of the world's best sleight of hand artists, Lost in the Shuffle is a loving look at how playing cards have become synonymous with magic and the mysteries hidden in their art.

Two-time world champion Shawn Farquhar takes us through six countries as he both tries to prove his theory that hidden in the art of every deck of cards are the clues to the conspiracy to kill a French king in 1498, while simultaneously creating a brand new routine, that tells the real story of Charles VIII's untimely demise. Workshopping different elements of the routine with four top magicians, the film pulls back the curtain on the creativity, ingenuity and psychological tricks the modern magician employs to make us all believe in the impossible... www.lostintheshuffle.film.

Lost in the Shuffle stars Shawn Farquhar, Michael Vincent, Juan Tamariz, Alexandra Duvivier and Richard Turner. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the producer. This event is free for members. Guests, both magical and non-magical can also attend. There will be a £20 charge, payable at the door. Guests need to register in advance by emailing guestlist@themagiccircle.co.uk. 10.8.24

Kenneth crowned 'King of Magical Arts' in his native homeland of Southern Nigeria. On 30th July, 2024, Kenneth was crowned a King of Magical Arts in his native homeland of Southern Nigeria. The purpose and mission of his traditional Chieftancy title is to use the platform of magic towards the growth and development of various community projects and charitable causes. This includes empowering youth, and his involvement in Project Magic. The symbolic occasion was a privilege and indeed a proud moment for Kenneth and his family and was attended by numerous Chiefs and Chieftesses, together with well-wishers.

London born Kenneth is a long-time member of The Magic Circle, The International Brotherhood of Magicians and Order of Merlin. Aside from his medical practice, within the NHS, Kenneth is an all-rounder but specialised in Psychic & Bizarre Magic 25 years ago. After the coronation, on demand, he treated the packed arena of locals to some traditional magic, including "Water from India", and Africa's favourite "money production" – where everyone went wild scrambling for the native currency!

Jay Adkins: 'Tenyo Small Plastic Wonders Lecture' - now booking. I have been a collector of Tenyo for over 30 years and my collection reflects this. So I thought I'd bring out some of my favourite pieces to show, talk about, and allow people to experience the wonder that these effects give. This lecture revolves around the beauty and ingenuity of the Tenyo world, from magicians calling them simple plastic magic tricks, I show how they are a wonder of design with great thought going into them. The lecture is filled with current Tenyo effects along with classics and rare items also including some not to be found in the UK. I hope to show that they are not just plastic effects, they are ingenuous.

Coupled with stories on the creation process, along with hands-on demonstrations, I will explain and let members handle my collection as well as giving an insight to the magical world of Tenyo.

"What a spellbinding evening where Jay Adkins unveiled the charming world of Tenyo magic. It was a delightful surprise to see some of the Tenyo tricks I had never encountered before, and to marvel at the ingenious methods and principles behind these mostly plastic marvels. Jay's boundless enthusiasm and passion for his Tenyo collection was contagious. One of the highlights of the evening was learning about the exceptional Tenyo inventors. Jay’s vast collection spans modern Tenyo tricks back to retro and rare items, including some only available in Japan."

John Fealey, remembered by Al Smith. I was saddened to read of the death of John Fealey. I hadn’t seen him for donkey's years but he popped up at the conventions, as we all did back then. This photo is one of several I took of him outside our digs in 1985. The event was the British Ring Convention in Southport.

Why he decided to stop where he did, I don’t know. Or, more likely, I can’t remember now. Before he lit the torches, he was juggling three regular clubs. He'd only just bought them and was still adjusting to the weight and whatnot. During all this people were passing by, pausing for a while, then carrying on. The non-magicians paused longer than the magicians.

After a few hit-and-miss minutes, John put the clubs down, intending to pick up the torches. At that moment, Lynn Thomas came along, picked up the clubs, juggled them for a couple of minutes without any trouble, put the clubs down and strolled on. He looked back at John and smiled, nodding to the people enjoying the situation. John laughed, I laughed and so did the passersby.
